College of Charleston's Kaycie Carr and Chattanooga's Lara Newberry share Molten Southern Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors

SPARTANBURG, SC ? College of Charleston’s Kaycie Carr and Chattanooga’s Lara Newberry have been named the Molten Southern Conference Co-Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of November 7.

Carr, a senior setter from Sylvania, OH, garnered her second consecutive player of the week honor as she helped the Cougars to two wins this past week, which clinched a second consecutive Southern Conference regular season title for the College of Charleston. In those two matches, Carr tallied 90 assists with an average of 15.0 assists per game. Against Appalachian State on Friday, Carr hit the ball at a .417 percent clip, recording 45 assists, six kills and six digs. For the week, Carr had 14 digs, six kills and three service aces.

Newberry, a freshman libero from Chattanooga, TN, guided the Mocs to two wins on the week, including a win at Georgia Southern. Newberry recorded 28 digs in a 3-2 victory over Wofford and bested that performance by registering 34 digs in a four-game victory at GSU. For the week, Newberry averaged 6.89 digs per game and ranks fourth nationally in digs, averaging 6.18 per game. In her last match, Newberry broke the school record for digs in a season, shattering the previous standard of 609. She now has 624 total digs on the season.

The Cougars will close out the regular season at home against Georgia Southern on Friday, while the Mocs will host Lipscomb on Wednesday before heading to UNC Greensboro to close out the season on Saturday night.

Other top performances this week: Dianna Thomas of Appalachian State (averaged 3.67 kills and hit .340 in two matches, Marina Daniel of The Citadel (recorded 45 kills in three matches), Heather Koontz of Western Carolina (recorded 16 kills and 13 digs in one match), Liz Sheets of Wofford (averaged 1.0 blocks and 2.5 digs per game in three matches).
