Davidson 3, The Citadel 1
Charleston, SC - Freshman setter Emily Hill set a new freshman milestone for The Citadel (4-26, 0-17 SoCon) but Davidson (13-17, 9-7 SoCon) was too strong as they downed the Bulldogs, 3-1 (30-21, 30-21, 25-30, 30-18) in Southern Conference volleyball action Sunday afternoon in McAlister Field House.
The Cadets were led by senior middle blocker Marina Daniel with 17 kills, while freshman outside hitter Rachel Sanders added 13. Hill had 42 set assists for the `Dogs to push her season total to 1,015. This makes her the first Citadel setter to go over the 1,000-assist mark in her freshman season. Defensively, senior outside hitter Stefanie Farris had 20 digs, while she and freshman middle blocker Alexandra Morrell ad one solo block each.
For Davidson, junior outside hitter Liz Williamson had a match-high 24 kills. Junior setter Jenna Dykstra added 52 assists for the Wildcats. Defensively, sophomore libero Lindsey Woeste had 15 digs, while freshman middle blocker Kittery Neale had four block assists.
Davidson will host Furman at 7:00 pm on Friday, November 11. The Citadel will close out the regular season on Saturday, November 12 when they host Georgia Southern at 7:00 pm in McAlister Field House. That match has been designated as Senior Night.
Georgia Southern 3, Western Carolina 2
STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern University Volleyball team overcame a two game deficit to defeat the Catamounts of Western Carolina 3-2, Sunday afternoon (Nov. 6th) in Hanner Fieldhouse.
After dropping the first two games by scores of 27-30, the Eagles (19-9, 12-4) mounted comebacks of 30-19 in game 3, 30-27 in game 4, and 15-12 in the decisive game 5. Georgia Southern was lead by senior Iulia Porumbescu who recorded 21 kills and 17 digs, and sophomore Bailey Coleman who tallied 21 kills and 17 digs. Coleman also added three blocks. Sophomore Gorana Bacic and freshman Christy Dowd recorded double-digit kills as well, Bacic with 11 and Dowd with 17.
Senior Natalia Galantini led the team in sets with 37, while freshman Mae Chabra contributed a total of 32.
The match concluded the 2005 home schedule for the Eagles; the team will travel to Atlanta and Charleston this week for their remaining three matches against Georgia State, College of Charleston and The Citadel, before returning to Statesboro on November 17 to begin play in the Southern Conference Championships.
Wofford 3, UNC Greensboro 0
In its final home contest of the season, the Wofford volleyball team swept visiting UNC Greensboro, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in the Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C. The Terriers held off a Spartan squad that did not back down from any challenge in winning the match 30-27, 30-20 and 31-29.
The hosts used a balanced offensive attack to earn the victory. No player had more than nine kills while the six starters each had at least five kills and 10 total attacks.
In her final home match, senior Rhea DeJesus led all players with 32 assists while hitting a match-high .400 on five kills and 10 total attacks with just one error
She was matched with five kills and 10 total attacks from classmate Angela Berry. Joining the pair in her final home contest was Katie Sobczyk. Sobczyk posted eight kills and 23 total attacks, while recording a team-high 10 digs.
The Wofford (12-14, 7-9 SoCon) offensive leader was junior Christal Carey with nine kills on 31 total attacks with three service aces. In game three with the Terriers trailing 14-11, Carey stepped in to serve and mounted a five-point surge as Wofford reclaimed the lead 16-14 and never looked back in closing out the sweep.
Freshman Liz Sheets hit .353 on the strength of seven kills and one error on 17 total attacks with nine digs and a match-high two solo blocks.
Fellow rookie Brittany Thompson tallied seven kills on 29 total attacks and added seven digs defensively.
Sophomore Lisa Lindemenn led all players with four service aces and classmate Tory Macomson saw time as a libero for the Terriers in game three.
Pacing the Spartans were Hilary Overby and Lauren Richards with eight kills apiece. Overby also collected a team-high three service aces.
Setter Adrian Hicks led UNC Greensboro (4-23, 2-14 SoCon) with a .333 hitting percentage on five kills and one error on 12 total attacks. Hicks finished with 31 assists for the visitors.
Alysia Rosvold notched a match-high 17 digs while Kaitlyn Nortz and Hicks led UNCG with three blocks apiece.
Wofford will close its season with a pair of road league matches next weekend starting at 7 p.m. Friday at Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. The Terriers then travel to Davidson, N.C., to end the regular season at 7 p.m. Saturday versus Davidson.
