Appalachian State 3, The Citadel 0
Charleston, SC - Freshman outside hitter Rachel Sanders led The Citadel (4-25, 0-16 SoCon) with 14 kills but Appalachian State (20-7, 13-2 SoCon) had three attackers in double-digits to beat the Bulldogs, 3-0 (33-31, 30-26, 30-26) in Southern Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon in McAlister Field House.
Senior middle blocker Marina Daniel added 10 kills for the Cadets as well as a match-high three service aces. The Citadel also received 38 set assists from freshman setter Emily Hill. Freshman libero Ashley Winter had 11 digs and Daniel tallied two total blocks for the Bulldogs.
Appalachian State received a match-high 17 kills from sophomore outside hitter Brittany Zahn. Freshman outside hitter Ashley Fliehr (11) and sophomore right side hitter Dianna Thomas (10) added double-digit kills for the Mountaineers. Sophomore setter Lorelle Rau had 42 assists. Defensively, senior defensive specialist Kali Rumberger and junior libero Rachel gates each had eight digs, while freshman middle blocker Carla Durham had seven total blocks.
Appalachian State will host Wofford next Friday at 7:00 pm. The Citadel will host Davidson on Sunday, November 6 at 2:00 pm in McAlister Field House.
College of Charleston 3, Davidson 0
The College of Charleston defeated Davidson 3-0 (30-16, 30-19, 30-23) Saturday at the John Kresse Arena to win the Southern Conference regular season championship for the fifth consecutive year.
CofC moves to 26-1 overall and 17-0 in the SoCon with the victory. If the Cougars defeat Georgia Southern next Friday at home they will have only the seventh undefeated season in the SoCon’s volleyball history.
Davidson falls to 12017 overall and 8-7 in the SoCon. The Wildcats will take on The Citadel on Sunday at 2 p.m. before finishing the season with two home matches against Furman and Wofford.
Amanda Timmers and Tiffany Blum each recorded double-digit kills with Timmers earning 12 and Blum earning 11 on the day. Kaycie Carr added 45 assists to move into third place all-time in CofC history with 3, 987 for her career. She has also has 1,052 assists on the year which marks the third straight year Carr has reached 1,000 assists.
Liz Williamson led Davidson offensively with 12 kills. Katie Pierucci led the Wildcats defensively with 15 digs and Jenna Dykstra notched 35 assists in the match.
CofC will honor their seniors next Friday, Nov. 11th at 7 p.m. at the John Kresse Arena with Georgia Southern coming to town.
Furman 3, UNC Greensboro 1
GREENVILLE, South Carolina -
Furman’s Lady Paladin volleyball team ended the 2005 home schedule with a victory on Saturday, defeating the visiting Spartans of UNC Greensboro 3-1 (30-22, 26-30, 30-25, 30-15) in Alley Gym.
Furman won games one, three, and four to seal the match victory and improve to 12-14 overall and 8-8 in Southern Conference play, while the Spartans fell to 4-22 overall and 2-13 in league action.
The Lady Paladins were paced by sophomore outside hitter Chibuzo Aguocha, who tallied 21 kills with a .256 attack percentage in the victory. Freshman Emily Harby added 13 kills, while Whitney Purser contributed 12 and Ally Hock tallied up 10. In addition, libero Kim Tonkin recorded a team-best 15 digs, while setter Molly Rybak, a senior playing in her final home match, totaled 50 assists and 10 digs in the win.
The Furman net defense, which totaled 14.0 blocks in the match, was anchored by Harby, a freshman middle hitter who totaled three block solos and four block assists in the effort. Kerry Wooten added six block assists, while Aguocha contributed four.
UNCG was led by Hilary Overby’s 10 kills, while Christin Heverly contributed 12 digs. Kaitlyn Nortz topped the Spartan’s net defense with seven block assists, while Lauren Keiser added a block solo and four assists to the effort.
Furman returns to action next Friday night in a 7 p.m. match at Davidson. The Spartans will face Wofford on Sunday in Spartanburg.
Chattanooga 3, Georgia Southern 1
STATESBORO, Ga. --- After losing game one, Chattanooga rallied to win three straight games, leaving Statesboro with a 3-1 Southern Conference volleyball win over Georgia Southern Friday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The Lady Mocs won by the scores of 24-30, 30-25, 32-30, 30-25. The win gives UTC head coach Lisa Rhodes her 300th career victory.
Chattanooga improves to 14-13 overall and 9-6 in the SoCon while Georgia Southern falls to 18-9 and 11-3.
Down 21-19 in the first game, GSU reeled off seven straight points to take a 26-21 lead and didn’t look back.
The Eagles fell behind 19-13 in game two, but battled back again to take its first lead at 22-21. But this time the Lady Mocs responded and took eight of the next nine points.
Game three was a see-saw affair and neither team led by more than four points until back-to-back kills from GSU senior Iulia Porumbescu put the Eagles up 27-22.
Following a timeout, UTC put together another rally, eventually fighting off four match points and scored three straight to end game three.
With the score 24-24 in the final game, Chattanooga put away the match with a 6-1 run.
Porumbescu recorded a double-double with a match-high 28 kills and 25 digs. The Eagles put up 9.5 blocks for the match with junior Jennifer Charles recording five total blocks. Charles also finished the match with 13 kills. Setters Natalia Galantini and Mae Chabra combined for 58 assists.
For Chattanooga, senior Lindsey Galloway led a balanced offensive attach with 12 kills and 22 digs. Sophomores Leslee Ball and Julianna Martinez recorded 11 kills each and senior Kelly Ramsay added 10. Freshman libero Lara Newberry had a match-best 34 digs while setter Bethany Herndon recorded 40 assists.
Georgia Southern seniors Christy Mitchell, Porumbescu and Galantini were honored in ceremonies held before the match. The trio has led the Eagles to 89 wins in four seasons, the second-best total by a senior class in school history.
The Lady Mocs will host Lipscomb Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The Eagles entertain Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in their regular season home finale.
Wofford 3, Elon 1
6-0 run to open game four helped push the Wofford volleyball team past visiting Elon, 3-1, Saturday evening in Southern Conference action in the Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers captured the match in Spartanburg, S.C, by scores of 30-25, 24-30, 30-24 and 30-19.
After Wofford took the 2-1 lead following game three, it started the final game with a 6-0 lead keyed by three consecutive service aces from freshman Liz Sheets. Her service aces provided points four, five and six and
forced Elon to call a timeout. Sheets finished the match with four total service aces along with seven kills and one error on 19 total blocks for a .316 hitting percentage. She also added 11 digs and four total blocks, including one solo stop, and 13.5 points.
Fellow rookie Brittany Thompson, a Southern Conference Freshman of the Year candidate, led the Terriers with 16 kills and 41 total attacks for a .244 hitting percentage to go along with two service aces. She tallied 10 digs and three assisted blocks on the defensive end.
The top hitter of the match was Wofford’s senior Katie Sobczyk with a .350 hitting percentage on eight kills and one error among 20 total attacks.
Junior Christal Carey also had a productive night for the Terriers with 13 kills and 34 total attacks, while posting a team-high 14 digs and two solo blocks.
Wofford (11-14, 6-9 SoCon) also received 42 assists from senior setter Rhea DeJesus, while classmate Angela Berry contributed seven kills on 20 total attacks and five total blocks.
Leading the Phoenix was an 18-kill and 47-total attack night by Britany Westphal. Juliena Gigon added 12 kills and 25 total attacks, while Ashley Ruckert provided Elon (7-21, 5-11 SoCon) with 30 total attacks.
Libero Brooke Pickard paced all players with 17 digs, while Natalie Moore notched 32 assists for the visitors. The pair each registered two service aces on the night.
The Terriers will close their home schedule with a 2 p.m. match Sunday versus UNC Greensboro. Prior to the contest, Wofford will recognize Berry, DeJesus and Sobczyk as part of Senior Day ceremonies. The Phoenix next play at home versus North Carolina A&T at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
