Furman 3, Elon 0
Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team completed a season sweep of Elon with a 3-1 victory over the Phoenix Friday night at Alley Gym.
After a quick 30-17 victory in game one, the Lady Paladins fell in a game two marathon 33-31. Furman returned from the break between games two and three to post a decisive 30-18 victory, then held on for a 30-26 win in game four to seal the match.
The Lady Paladins were led by sophomore Kerry Wooten, who posted a career-best 19 kills with a .500 attack percentage. Whitney Purser added 17 kills and 15 digs to the Lady Paladin effort, while Emily Harby contributed 15 kills and libero Kim Tonkin tallied a team-best 26 digs. Harby also paced the Paladin net defense with five block assists, while Hock added four block assists and Courtney Stewardson and Wooten each added three.
Britany Westphal paced the Phoenix with 13 kills, while Emily Lucci added 10. Brooke Pickard totaled 11 digs while Ashley Ruckert, Juliena Gigo, and Lucci each claimed four block assists.
With the win, the Lady Paladins improve to 11-14 overall and 7-8 in Southern Conference play. Elon falls to 7-20 overall and 5-10 in league play. Furman will wrap up the 2005 home slate Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against UNC Greensboro, while Elon travels to Spartanburg to play the Wofford Terriers.
College of Charleston 3, Appalachian State 0
The College of Charleston volleyball team clinched at least a share of the Southern Conference Championship with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-16, 30-25) victory over Appalachian State on Friday night at the John Kresse Arena.
With the victory the Cougars move to 25-1 overall and 16-0 in the SoCon. With a win Saturday against Davidson CofC can clinch the SoCon regular season championship outright. This marks the fifth year in a row that the Cougars have won at least a share of the SoCon championship.
ASU falls to 19-8 on the season, with a 12-3 record in the SoCon.
The Cougars were led on offense by Amanda Timmers. Timmers recorded 17 kills on the night and was one of four Cougars to record double-digit kills. Annie Uthe earned 13 kills, Tiffany Blum earned 11, and Rebecca Wieters earned 10.
Kaycie Carr registered 45 assists and Marie Dobrenz had 29 digs to lead all players.
Dianna Thomas led the Mountaineers offensively with eight kills. Kali Rumberger had 12 digs from the libero position and Lorelle Rau notched 22 assists in the match.
CofC will host Davidson on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the John Kresse Arena. ASU will head across town to take on the Citadel on Saturday as well.
