Chattanooga 89, Kennesaw State 54, Exhibition
CHATTANOGA, TN - Seniors Katasha Brown and Tiffani Roberson combined for 30 points to lead Chattanooga to an 89-54 win over Kennesaw State in a preseason exhibition game at the McKenzie Arena Thursday night.
Brown had a team-high 16 points hitting 6-of-8 from the floor and was perfect on 3-pointers and free throws with two each. Roberson added 14 points in just 15 minutes of play for Chattanooga and had three defensive rebounds, a steal and a block. Sophomore Alex Anderson, who started her first collegiate game, recorded the third double-double of her career with 11 points and 12 boards.
“I guess I got the jitters out,” Anderson said. “We’re not happy though. I think we could have done a lot better and have a lot to work on.”
Freshman Ashley Huff was the first player off the bench for UTC and went 5-of-8 as the fourth Lady Moc in double-digits with 12 points. Sophomore Laura Hall started the game at the point for UTC and led the team in assists with five and tallied a pair of steals.
“We played hard. I guess that was the good thing,” Lady Mocs’ Head Coach Wes Moore said. “Kennesaw State put pressure on the point guard and that makes you get away from what you’re doing.”
Freshman post Erin Ogan had eight points for Chattanooga and pulled down seven rebounds in just 15 minutes and 6-foot-5 center Sarah Gordon put up six points in her first collegiate game. On the first play, she got tied up on a rebound and twisted her ankle. In evident pain, she refused to leave the game.
“I wasn’t coming out unless there was blood,” Gordon said.
Kennesaw State’s All-American Shavonder Clarke led the Lady Owls with 15 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and chipped in five steals. The Owls had a brief scare early in the contest when Clarke took a spill after causing a Lady Mocs’ turnover. After a brief stint on the bench, she returned to the lineup.
Justina Lujan also hit double-digits for KSU making all three of her 3-point attempts for 11 points. Starters Dominika Mieszkowska and Jennifer Baker each added eight points for Kennesaw State. Desiree McKenzie pulled down six off the glass.
Kennesaw State is making the jump this season to Division I. Last season the Lady Owls went 18-12 overall and 8-8 in the Division II Peach Belt Conference. KSU made just 30.6 percent of its shots hitting 19-of-62 and were 5-for-23 from the 3-point line.
Both teams committed 26 turnovers and Chattanooga grabbed 17 steals to KSU’s 12. Chattanooga crashed the board pulling down 51 rebounds, 35 defensive. The Lady Mocs shot 52.3 percent (20-of-36) from the floor and 43.8 percent from beyond the arc on 7-of-16 from an extended 3-point line.
This season the NCAA is experimenting with a few rule changes including moving the 3-point line out nine inches and implementing a 10-second back court rule. Chattanooga will see this again in the Preseason Women’s NIT Friday, Nov. 11 at Indiana State.
