GREENVILLE, SC ? The Koehrn sisters continued to make Davidson’s 2005 season magical in the Wildcats’ 2-0 shutout win over Elon in the first game of the 2005 Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship at Stone Stadium on the campus of Furman University.
Kara Koehrn, who was named the 2005 SoCon Women’s Soccer Player of the Year at a banquet on Wednesday, scored the game’s first goal in the 57th-minute on an assist from Tiffany Mumby. The senior took the pass from Mumby on the left side and slotted the ball just inside the right post and past Phoenix goalkeeper Lizz Johnson.
The goal was Koehrn’s 19th of the 2005 season, tying a Davidson school record.
Sister Kristen put the game away in the final minute of the contest when she beat Johnson to net the game’s final score of 2-0.
With the win Davidson (14-4-2) advanced to the semifinals where they will square off against the Western Carolina Catamounts at 5 p.m. Friday.
#4 Western Carolina 2, #5 College of Charleston 1, OT
GREENVILLE, SC ? Heather Dittmer scored in the first overtime to give Western Carolina a dramatic 2-1 win over College of Charleston in quarterfinal action at the Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship at Stone Stadium on the Furman University campus.
Dittmer took a ball from about 23 yards out and volleyed it towards goal. The ball was deflected enough by a College of Charleston defender and just made its way below the crossbar for the game-winning goal at the 97:37 mark of the first overtime. Marie Nicolini was credited with the assist on the goal.
The game was tied 1-1 after regulation, marking the third time all-time that the two teams had met in an overtime game. Western Carolina is now 2-1 in overtime games between the two institutions.
The Cougars’ Kristin Rhyne, a 2005 All-SoCon selection, commenced the game’s scoring when she placed in a cross from Teryn Schuetz in the 18th-minute. The goal was Rhyne’s 10th of the season.
The game stayed at a lull at 1-0 in favor of Charleston until the 63rd-minute.
The game’s complexion totally changed shape around this time, as the Catamounts began to mount a full-fledged attack, culminating in a game-tying goal at the 63:25 mark when midfielder Megan Chambers scored to square the game at 1-1.
Chambers found the back of the net on a 30-yard shot that appeared to be going just wide. With the Charleston defense dissipated after a clearance, Chambers took advantage of the situation, sneaking the ball inside the left post and shocking Cougars goalkeeper Erin Smith.
The goal was the first for Chambers in the 2005 season.
Western Carolina (16-5-0) advances on to face the Davidson Wildcats in the semifinals at 5 p.m. on Friday.
#3 UNC Greensboro 2, #6 Chattanooga 0
GREENVILLE, SC ? UNC Greensboro issued a workmanlike effort in their quarterfinal game with Chattanooga on Thursday, shutting down the Mocs for a 2-0 win.
UNC Greensboro never trailed in the contest, taking an early 1-0 lead when Amy Carnell found the back of the net in the 21st-minute on a double-assist from Deven Beachum and Nicollette DeLaine
The goal was the sixth of the year for the All-SoCon performer and the reigning SoCon Player of the Week.
A little over 15 minutes into the second half UNC Greensboro found their way onto the board once again when Karla Davis’ throw-in careened off Mary Kate Towne’s head into the back of the net to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Spartans. Townes has now garnered a goal four times over the course of the 2005 season.
UNC Greensboro (10-6-1) advances to the semifinals of the 2005 SoCon Women’s Soccer Championship where they will face off against second-seeded Furman at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
#2 Furman 4, #7 Wofford 0
GREENVILLE, SC ? Behind the one goal and two assist effort of Gena Villari, Furman ended the first day of the 2005 SoCon Women’s Soccer Championship with a 4-0 shutout win of proximity rival Wofford.
The shutout win also helped to accrue one more game to Furman goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw’s own league record, which now stands at 35 games.
After nobody could find the back of the net the last time the two teams partook in a game against each other in the regular season on Oct. 23, Furman got off the snide in the series quickly Thursday night, capitalizing off a corner kick just over five minutes into the contest.
Gena Villari took the corner finding 2005 All-SoCon performer Tara Marker’s head to give the Lady Paladins an early 1-0 advantage at the 5:14 mark.
The goal was Marker’s seventh of the 2005 campaign.
A little under 13 minutes later, Furman found their way between the pipes once again, as All-SoCon honoree Nicky Darling rocketed a shot from just outside the 18-yard box past Wofford goalkeeper Bernie Sikes. Darling now has seven goals on the year.
Furman added another right before the end of the half on a Villari shot from 25 yards out that passed the outstretched arms of Sikes and made the score 3-0.
After that not much happened except some invective words and some heated play, but Maggie Welder found the back of the net and her second goal of the season at the 67:12 mark on an assist from Villari to put the game at 4-0.
Furman advances to the semifinals of the SoCon Women’s Soccer Championship where they will take to the pitch at 7:30 p.m. Friday against UNC Greensboro.
