College of Charleston 96, Florida Christian 42

Charleston, S.C. ? Josh Jackson scored 16 points while freshman Jermaine Johnson added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in leading the College of Charleston to a 96-42 win over Florida Christian in men’s college basketball action before 1,817 at John Kresse Arena on Tuesday.

 

With the win, the Cougars improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Suns fell to 0-13.  The Cougars open Southern Conference play at UNC Greensboro on Saturday at 7:00.

 

Charleston built a 56-24 lead at intermission behind Jackson’s nine points and eight points each from Renardo Dickerson and Dontaye Draper.

 

Dickerson added 11 points, while freshman Marcus Hammond scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds in 21 minutes of action.  Freshman Ryan Scott came off the bench and played a team-high 23 minutes.  He finished with four points, five rebounds and four assists.

 

Charleston, which saw 12 players tally at least 10 minutes of work, had a 62-12 scoring advantage in the paint.  The Cougars’ reserves outscored the Suns’ bench, 52-3.

 

FCC got a team-high 15 points from Kenny Backhaus and six rebounds from Shane Smarr.

 

For the game, the Cougars hit on 48.2 percent from the floor connecting on 41-of-85 shots from the floor.  The Suns hit just 31.4 percent (16-51).

 

The Cougars held a 66-20 rebounding margin, including 34-7 on the offensive glass.  Charleston tied its school record for most rebounds in a game. The Cougars had 66 rebounds in a 103-86 win over Voorhees on January 19, 1974.

 


Middle Tennessee 81, Chattanooga 71

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - Fats Cuyler and Adam Vogelsberg combined for 36 points to lead Middle Tennessee to an 81-71 victory Tuesday over winless Chattanooga.

 

Cuyler scored 19 points and Vogelsberg 17 as the only players in double figures for the Blue Raiders (2-1). Bud Howard and Kevin Kanaskie each had five assists.

 

Chattanooga (0-4) kept it close by making 23 of 26 free throws. Keddric Mays led four players in double figures with 16 points. Casey Long had 14, Alphonso Pugh 12, Jaycen Herring 11 and Charles Anderson 10.

 

Middle Tennessee shot 52 percent from the floor, including 61.9 percent in the second half, or 13 of 21 attempts. The Blue Raiders led 38-30 at halftime.

 

Chattanooga controlled the boards, 35-27, with Pugh grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Ricky Hood and Long each added five.
