The Citadel 73, Stetson 60
Raleigh, NC?Senior guard Dante Terry registered 21 points to lead The Citadel past Stetson 73-60 Sunday in the final round of the Hispanic College Fund Classic hosted by N.C. State. Terry was one of four players to put up double figures for the Bulldogs.
“I am very pleased with the way we played today,” said head coach Pat Dennis. “We win games when we play smart basketball and we played smart basketball today.”
The Citadel (1-2) got off to a slow start, trailing 13-7 with 13:18 left in the first half. The Dogs then went on a 9-0 run to take a 16-13 lead with just under seven minutes left before the break. Terry hit two-of-two free throws as Joseph Thompson added five to help put the Cadets ahead.
Stetson (0-3) took a slight 20-21 edge at the four minute mark, but Terry drained a three and junior J’Mel Everhart and sophomore Demetrius Nelson each added two to give The Citadel and four point advantage at halftime, 27-23.
The Bulldogs dominated in the second half, outscoring the Hatters 46-37. With just under 10 minutes left in the game, Terry drained three consecutive threes before the Dogs broke for a 10-0 run to gain a solid 60-45 lead. The Hatters could only get within 12 before the final 73-60 defeat.
Will Hollomon posted 17 points to pace Stetson. E.J. Gordon and Anthony Register also gave a solid effort for the Hatters, scoring 12 points each.
Sophomore forward Donny McLendon was the second top scorer for The Citadel with 13 as Everhart and Thompson each registered 10. Everhart also grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Dogs.
The Bulldogs were 25-for-49 with a 51 percent shooting percentage compared to Stetson who shot 34.8 percent. The Cadets also registered a 69.6 shooting percentage from the charity stripe.
“We shot very well because we didn’t take any bad shots,” added Dennis. “We were patient and took 20-30 seconds off the clock on almost every possession.”
During the three day Classic, sophomore Demetrius Nelson led with 36 points over the three game span. Terry was second with 33 while Everhart paced the Bulldogs in rebounds with 26. Terry drained five three’s to claim the number eight spot on the all-time three-point field goal chart with 109. Terry needs 16 to catch Aaron Nichols who is currently seventh all-time.
The Citadel will return to Charleston to host Asbury College for its home opener on Wednesday, November 23 at 7:15 pm in McAlister Field House.

Vanderbilt 81, Furman 60
Nashville, Tenn. - Vanderbilt connected on 71.4% of its shots from the field in the second half to erase a two point halftime deficit and down the Furman Paladins 81-60 in men's basketball action Sunday evening in front of a crowd of 6,032 at Memorial Gym in Nashville, Tenn.
"I was disappointed in the outcome tonight because I did not feel like this was a 20-point game," said Furman head coach Larry Davis. "We gave up nine straight baskets in the paint in the second half and that was the difference."
Trailing 38-36 at the break, Vanderbilt (2-0) converted 20-of-28 field goal attempts and did not commit a turnover in the second stanza. After Stanley Jones gave Furman a 49-48 lead on a three-point play with 14:51 remaining, the Commodores exploded for a 22-5 run over the next 10:46 to open up a 70-54 advantage to put away the Paladins. The streak included seven layups, three by forward DeMarre Carroll.
Moussa Diagne and Eric Webb made three pointers in the open four minutes as the Paladins jumped out to an early 14-7 lead. After the Commodores rallied for a 29-28 lead with 3:45 left in the half, Webb connected on two three pointers and two free throws while Gerad Punch added two points at the foul line to push Furman to the two-point halftime cushion. Furman made 5-of-12 (41.7%) three-pointers in the first period.
Webb paced the Paladins with 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Diagne and Punch each added 10 points each while Jones led Furman with seven rebounds. Furman, who connected on 15-of-15 free throws in the first 20 minutes, made just 2of-5 from the charity stripe and shot just 28.6% (8-of-28) from the field in the second half.
Shan Foster scored 25 points to lead four Commodores in double figures. Carroll tallied 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field while Ted Skuchas (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Alex Gordon (16 points, 10 assists) each recorded double-doubles.
Furman, 1-1, returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Lubbock, Texas, to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Tip off is set for 8:00.

Northern Iowa 68, Western Carolina 46
Des Moines, Iowa ? Wooden Award candidate Ben Jacobsen scored 10 first-half points and Eric Coleman led all scorers with 17 points as Northern Iowa (1-0) handed Western Carolina (1-4) a 68-46 setback Sunday night. The contest was played on a neutral site and was game two of the Mediacom Two Rivers Shootout at the new Wells Fargo Arena.
Jacobsen finished with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Panthers, who were ranked 17th in Sports Illustrated’s preseason basketball poll. Coleman was 7-of-9 from the field and pulled down six assists. Other key factors in the UNI win were the Panthers out-rebounding Western Carolina 37-28 and the Panthers dishing out 20 assists on 25 field goals made.
Western’s Corey Muirhead made the first basket of the game, but Northern Iowa answered with a 12-2 run, capped by a Coleman jumper. The Catamounts battled back and tied the game at 12-12 thanks to a 3-pointer by Kyle Greathouse, a 3-pointer by Negus McKenna and a McKenna layup. The Panthers’ Jacobsen broke the tie with a jumper as Northern Iowa finished the first half with a 25-8 run, taking a 37-20 lead at the break, and never relinquished the lead the remainder of the contest.
Northern Iowa pushed its advantage to 24 with 12 minutes left in the game. At that point, WCU head coach Larry Hunter looked to his bench for a spark, both offensively and defensively. The group responded and cut the Catamounts’ deficit to 16 with 10 minutes remaining. However, that is a close as Western would get.
For the fourth time in five games this season, Antonio Russell was Western’s leading scorer, making 7-of-7 free throws en route to his 11 points. Stan Johnson, who sank two 3-pointers, scored eight second-half points. McKenna finished with five points and a career-high rebounds, which was also a game high.
Western Carolina will quickly return to action, hosting Atlanta Christian on Tuesday (Nov. 22) at 7:00 pm.
