GREENVILLE, SC -- The Southern Conference announced its 2005 Women’s Soccer All-Conference teams today, as well as the Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year. All honorees were voted on by the league’s coaches.
Davidson senior Kara Koehrn was selected as the Player of the Year. The Wildcats forward recorded a league-high 18 goals during the regular season and was first in the league in four major statistical categories (goals, goals per game, points and points-per-game). She finished the regular season with the most game-winning goals in the SoCon with eight, doubling the second-most game-winners. Davidson defender Melanee Smith earned the Freshman of the Year honor. Smith started 17 games for the Wildcats in 2005, picking up a goal and five assists from her defensive position.
Davidson head coach Greg Ashton was tabbed the Coach of the Year by his peers for the second straight season. Ashton orchestrated the Wildcats to an undefeated regular season (9-0-1) and their first Southern Conference regular-season title since 1996.
Eight schools were represented on the two squads. Furman placed the most players on the first team, with forward Andre’a Morrison, midfielders Kat Kelley and Tara Marker and goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw all earning slots on the team. UNC Greensboro garnered three spots on the first team, as forward Cara Hammond, midfielder Amy Carnell and defender Shannon Donovan earned their place among the top 11.
League-champion Davidson and College of Charleston had two players a piece named to the SoCon first team. Koehrn was joined by defender Nancy Haskell as the representatives for the Wildcats, while forward Kristin Rhyne and defender Amanda Andrews were chosen by the coaches as the Cougar players on the first team.
