SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today announced its football Players of the Week for the week of November 12. Appalachian State’s Richie Williams was named the Offensive Player of the Week honor while teammate Marques Murrell earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Citadel’s Ben Carnell was named the Freshman of the Week.
Williams, a 6-3, 190-lb. quarterback from Camden, SC, led the Mountaineers to a 35-7 win over Western Carolina on Saturday in the battle for the Old Mountain Jug. The senior racked up 248 yards of total offense and threw two touchdowns in the win. The Walter Payton Award candidate completed 10-of-15 passes for 164 yards and ran 11 times for 84 yards, averaging 7.6 yards per carry. He also had a 42-yard run on ASU’s first play from scrimmage, the longest of his career. Williams also became just the fourth player in SoCon history to compile at least 50 touchdown passes in a career. This is Williams’ fifth player of the week honor this season.
Other top offensive performances from November 12 include The Citadel’s Nuru Goodrum (97 yards, 24 carries, 1 TD), Furman’s Ingle Martin (16-of-24, 180 yards, 1TD; 26 rushing yards, 5 carries), and Georgia Southern’s Jayson Foster (119 yards, 4 TDs).
Murrell, a 6-2, 230-lb. defensive end from Fayetteville, NC, anchored the Mountaineer defense in the win over Western Carolina.

The junior recorded six tackles, a pair of sacks and two and half tackles for loss to lead a defense that allowed just 1.8 yards per rush. This was the third time this season that Murrell has registered multiple sacks and the fourth time in his career. Murrell is also a candidate for the Buck Buchanan Award. This is Murrell’s second player of the week honor this season.
Other top defensive performances include Georgia Southern’s John Mohring (7 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack) and Western Carolina’s Lamar Barnes (12 tackles).
Carnell, a 6-2, 205-lb. quarterback from Hanahan, SC, led The Citadel to a 21-0 win over Elon on Saturday. The true freshman got his first career start after starting the season on the scout team. Carnell was 14-of-20 for 152 yards and two touchdowns in his debut.
