Davidson 4, Appalachian State 1
DAVIDSON, NC ? Davidson soccer extended its unbeaten streak to six games on Thursday night as senior Kara Koehrn scored three goals to lead the Wildcats to a 4-1 win over visiting Appalachian State (9-3, 2-2 SoCon). The victory improves Davidson’s overall mark to 7-4-1 and Southern Conference record to 4-0, keeping the Wildcats atop the league standings.
In a steady rain that lasted the entire first period, the Mountaineers took an early lead on a goal by junior Dana Murphy in the 25th minute of play and enjoyed the advantage for about six minutes. Davidson, who has never suffered a loss to ASU in 18 meetings, responded with just under 32 minutes gone from the clock when Koehrn netted her first goal. On the play, the forward dribbled around a Mountaineer defender and lofted the ball in over the head of ASU’s freshman goalie, Megan Amorosi.
About seven minutes later, Koehrn headed a corner kick from junior Anne Stevens into the Mountaineer goal to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead going into the break.
“We did not adapt very well to the weather early in the game, and having them go up 1-0 refocused us,” Davidson head coach Greg Ashton said. “It was an outstanding individual effort by Kara Koehrn on that first goal, and we rewarded ourselves as a team by executing the second goal off the corner.”
Koehrn, who recorded seven of Davidson’s 11 total shots on the evening, notched her third goal in the 55th minute on an assist from sister Kristen for the Koehrns’ third combination score of the season. The sophomore played a ball upfield to Kara, who took on two Mountaineer defenders and drilled a low-liner into the ASU net for a 3-1 Wildcat lead.
With just over a minute left to play in the match, freshman Neely Meeks picked up her first collegiate goal with an assist from classmate Tiffany Mumby, duplicating the same final score by which Davidson won over ASU last year.
