Georgia Southern 3, The Citadel 0
STATESBORO, GA - Three different players scored for Georgia Southern as the Eagles improved to 2-1 in Southern Conference play with a 3-0 shutout of The Citadel Wednesday afternoon at a very wet Eagle Field.
Freshman Ashley Toussaint (Warner Robins, Ga.) started the scoring at the 16:51 mark with her third goal of the season, thanks to an assist from classmate Kate Boardman (Hilton Head, S.C.). So far, all three of Toussaint’s scoring tallies have been match winners for the Eagles.
Just under 10 minutes later (27:04), senior Jessica Rice (Pipersville, Pa.) stole the ball from a Bulldog defender and took it the rest of the way, blasting a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Rice’s goal is her first of the 2005 campaign.
Sophomore Megan Macdonald (Lilburn, Ga.) found the scoring column for the first time as well, hitting the back of the net from 15 yards out in the 66th minute.
“I was proud of the way we finished our opportunities today and it was good to see three different people score,” said GSU head coach Ashley Hart.
Macdonald and sophomore Laura-Ashley Harris (Jonesboro, Ga.) combined on the shutout for Georgia Southern. Harris had five of the team’s six saves in the second half. Sophomore Brit Bunnell (Barberton, Ohio) made nine saves for The Citadel.
“I thought our defense did a good job of limiting their shots on goal,” Hart added. “Head coach Chris Lenzo had his team working hard for the full 90 minutes.”
