Davidson 3, High Point 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? After starting the season out 1-7, the Davidson College women’s volleyball has been swinging on a high note, winning for the sixth time in their last eight games on Wednesday night when they defeated High Point 3-0 (30-16, 30-20, 36-34) in Belk Arena. The Wildcats improved to 7-11 overall in the non-conference match and won their third straight match in straight sets. The Panthers, finishing up a very long 12-match road trip, dropped to 10-7
Davidson easily picked up victories in game one and game two by jumping out to leads of 15-4 and 12-5. High Point made a late rally in game two, closing to within two points at 18-16 on a kill from Jamie Kaufman. The Wildcats, though, would get three kills down the stretch from junior Jenna Dykstra (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and two more from freshman Kittery Neale (Gainesville, Fla.) to secure the 30-20 win in game two. Neale finished with a match-high 12 kills, one off her career-high set back on Sept. 21.
Game three was much closer as the Panthers did not go away quietly. After Davidson opened up a 19-13 lead, High Point came back later to knot things up at 25-apiece on a kill from Ashley Mellott. The Panthers then had two times to force a game four, but the Wildcats hung tough. Junior Liz Williamson (Austin, Texas) made sure of it. With a season-low three kills on the night, her last two were the most important. First, down 32-31, Williamson hammered home only her second kill of match, tying the score at 32-32. After an attackk error by Wildcats, Williamson came right back and tied it up with her third kill of the match. Williamson then took care of business by earning the Wildcats’ 10th service ace of the match to secure the win.
Four players had six or more kills for Davidson and three players, led by sophomore Kate Pierucci with 14, had 10 or more digs.
The Panthers’ Michelle Feiser earned team-high honors in the kills department, finishing with nine on 27 swings.
Davidson will now carry its hot streak into this weekend’s home matches when they play SoCon leader College of Charleston on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. and then finish up with The Citadel on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m.
