SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today announced its football Players of the Week for the week of October 3. Furman’s Ingle Martin was named the Offensive Player of the Week while The Citadel’s Porter Johnson earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Georgia Southern’s Matt Wise was tabbed the Freshman of the Week.

player of the week selection. The senior led the Furman offensive attack by passing for 247 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for a fourth on an 80-yard scamper. Martin finished the contest with 327 yards of total offense, the sixth-highest total in school history. It was also part of a 610-yard team offensive output, the eighth-highest total in Furman history. He completed touchdown passes of 13, 11 and 65 yards, while also connecting on an 87-yard completion, the longest non-scoring pass in school history -- and the second-longest in SoCon annals.
Other top offensive performances from October 1 include Chattanooga’s Antonio Miller (passed for 110 yards and rushed for 81 in a win over No. 22 Wofford). Georgia Southern’s Jermaine Austin (125 yards rushing and two TDs) and The Citadel’s Kinta Palmer (threw for a 31-yard TD and caught a 23-yard pass for a score in a win at Western Carolina).
In only his fourth game as a linebacker, after three previous years as a fullback, Johnson helped the Bulldog defense hold Western Carolina to 14 yards rushing and 166 total yards in a 17-7 win over the No. 18 Catamounts. The senior from Loris, SC, had 11 tackles, 10 of them solo, while also recording six tackles for a loss, including one sack.
Other top defensive performances include Chattanooga’s Chris Johnson (10 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble), Elon’s Anthony Harris (career-high 15 tackles) and Georgia Southern’s Charrod Taylor (four tackles, including 2.5 for a loss).
A 6-3 defensive lineman from Hazelhurst, GA, GSU’s Wise registered five tackles in the Eagles’ 49-7 win at Elon. Wise had two tackles for a loss, one of which was a sack (for -8 yards), and also recorded a QB hurry.
