Furman 2, Chattanooga 0

GREENVILLE, SC - Katherine Kelley scored two goals, and Andie Hinshaw made eight saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season as Furman downed Chattanooga 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

"Chattanooga was a very well coached and organized team," said head coach Andrew Burr. "We had to work hard to get our chances, but we were able to capitalize and get on the board."

Chattanooga forced the early action in the seventh minute as Diana Jallo hit a 30 yard free kick that forced a save out of Lady Paladin goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw.

Katie Tucker played a through ball to Andrea Morrison in the 18th minute, but Morrison's attempt to chip Lady Moc goalkeeper Stacey Matthiessen was just high.

Furman got on the board at the 27:03 mark off a corner kick. Gena Villari played a ball into the penalty area that was flicked to the far post by Kate Myatt. Katherine Kelley's first touch half-volley found the upper corner at the far post for her second goal of the year.

Kelley's goal was the sixth match-winner of her career, tying her for ninth in Furman history.

The Lady Paladins carried the 1-0 lead into halftime despite being outshot 7-6 by Chattanooga. The Lady Mocs forced Hinshaw into five first-half saves, while Matthiessen recorded two stops in the first period.

Furman had a scoring opportunity in the 51st minute as Morrison beat her defender and was in alone with the keeper, but Matthiessen came off her line and made a sliding save on the shot.

Emily Krankowski beat a defender and was one-on-one with the Chattanooga, but a sliding save by Matthiessen resulted in a Furman corner kick.

On the ensuing free kick, Erin Sanders collected the ball at the penalty spot and sent a left-footed shot toward the goal. The shot beat the Lady Moc goalkeeper, but Lisa Becht saved the ball off the end line.

Kelley nearly added her second goal of the match in the 68th minute as her shot off a free kick from 40 yards was pushed over the crossbar by Matthiessen.

Furman added an insurance goal at the 87:03 mark on Kelley's second goal of the match, a penalty kick after a foul in the penalty area. Kelley now has three goals on the season.

The play was set up as Rachel Fry and Chattanooga defender chased a ball into the penalty area. The defender played the ball back to Matthiessen who misplayed the pass, allowing Fry a clear run at the goal. Matthiessen brought down Fry from behind, meriting a red-card and a penalty kick for the Lady Paladins.

Chattanooga held the advantage in shots 16-13, though Furman goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw was rarely tested. Furman held a commanding lead in corner kicks 7-1.

Furman improves to 7-2-1 on the season, 2-0-1 in the Southern Conference. Chattanooga falls to 4-7-0 overall, 1-2-0 in conference action.

Davidson 3, Georgia Southern 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Davidson freshman Tiffany Mumby notched two second-half goals against the visiting Eagles of Georgia Southern (2-8-1, 1-1 SoCon) in Sunday afternoon’s Southern Conference soccer match to help the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 6-4-1 on the year and remain undefeated (3-0) in the league.

Despite dominating the shot count, 35-3, Davidson was unable to connect for a goal until 20 minutes after the break when junior Amanda Traver received a back pass from classmate Anne Stevens and put it away from about 20 yards out. On the Wildcats’ second goal, freshman Mel Smith directed a forward pass into the box for Mumby, who sent the straight-on shot past advancing Eagle goalie Megan McDonald into an empty net. Mumby’s next goal came on an assist from senior Kara Koehrn.

“At halftime, we talked about being more composed in front of the goal and being patient,” Davidson head coach Greg Ashton said. “We created some very good chances we didn’t finish. Although it’s a win, and we’re happy with that, we need to improve on our finishes and get ready for Appalachian State on Thursday.”

Davidson came out firing in the second half, registering 25 shots after the break; Koehrn led the Wildcat attack with 11 shots on the day. A busy Georgia Southern goalie, McDonald tallied 11 saves. Meanwhile, Davidson senior Laura Schulenborg recorded her third shutout of the year, helping Davidson remain the only SoCon team that has not allowed a goal in league play this fall.

UNC Greensboro 3, Elon 0

GREENSBORO, NC ? The Spartans opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Deven Beachum scored her second goal of the season off a feed from senior Nicollette DeLaine to give UNCG a 1-0 lead.   DeLaine sent a service into the Phoenix box where Elon keeper Liz Johnson was unable to make the save, leaving the ball stranded in front on the goal where Beachum fired it into the back of the Phoenix net.  Senior Amy Carnell also picked up her fourth assist on the play.

Junior Meredith Paisley extended the UNCG lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute as she scored her first goal of the season.  The Greensboro, NC native fired a shot from over 30 yards out on the left side of the field that beat the diving Johnson to the right side of the goal.  The Spartans outshot Elon 11-2 in the first period and 21-6 for the game.

UNCG added a third goal in the 62nd minute when freshman Carolin Feierabend netted her first goal of the season on DeLaine’s second assist of the contest.  As DeLaine dribbled down the right side of the field, she sent a cross just outside the Elon box where Feierabend fired a one touch blast, beating Johnson with a goal into the right corner of the net.  The assist was DeLaine’s conference and team-leading seventh of the season.  Shannon Donovan also picked up an assist on the play as she started the scoring play with a service to DeLaine.

“It was good to get a conference win and I was pleased with our effort today against a hard working, very organized Elon team,” head coach Eddie Radwanski said.  “I liked our two games this past week, and now we’ll look to get ready for next week’s game.”
