SPARTANBURG, SC - Wofford senior Mallory Bramlett knocked in her fifth goal of the season five minutes into the second overtime to give the Terriers a 1-0 win over Chattanooga Friday nigh in women’s soccer action at Snyder Field.
Wofford improves to 5-11-2, 4-4-1 in SoCon action and clinched a spot for the Terriers in the Southern Conference tournament, which begins Nov. 3 in Greenville, SC.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in regulation and were scoreless through the first overtime. Five minutes into the second overtime, Bramlett dribbled through the Chattanooga defense and slid a shot past UTC goalkeeper Stacey Matthieseen for the win.
Western Carolina 2, Georgia Southern 0
STATESBORO, GA - Western Carolina sophomore Heather Dittmer (Marietta, Ga.) scored twice in the first 21 minutes leading the Catamounts to a 2-0 Southern Conference win over Georgia Southern Friday afternoon at Eagle Field.
With the win, WCU improves to 15-4 overall and 6-3 in the SoCon. Georgia Southern falls to 3-14-1 and 2-7.
Dittmer put Western Carolina up early, heading in a cross from freshman Arlan Whittle (Peachtree City, Ga.) on a direct kick at the 9:02 mark. Just over 11 minutes later (20:14), she added to the lead. Junior Meghan Reilly (Lubbock, Texas) dribbled down the left sideline and crossed to senior Natalie Turgeon (Raleigh, N.C.) at the penalty spot. Turgeon dropped it to Dittmer at the top of the 18-yard box, whose low line-drive shot made it through traffic for her fifth goal of the season.
GSU came within inches of pulling to 2-1 with less than 15 minutes remaining when freshman Ashley Toussaint’s (Warner Robins, Ga.) drive was deflected just wide of the goal by netminder Alesha Row (Fargo, N.D.).
Row made six saves for her 11th shutout of the season and third in a row. Eagle sophomore Laura-Ashley Harris (Jonesboro, Ga.) had 10 stops and allowed both goals.
UNC Greensboro 8, The Citadel 1
GREENSBORO, NC ? Reigning SoCon Player of the Year Amy Carnell tied a school record with four assists as UNC Greensboro exploded for eight goals in the Spartans’ 8-1 win over The Citadel Friday on Senior Night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
UNCG (10-5-1, 6-2-1 SoCon) wasted little time grabbing the early lead as senior Nicollette DeLaine put the Spartans ahead 1-0 just over five minutes into the game as she connected on a shot from three yards out off feeds from Carnell and Karla Davis. DeLaine struck again for the second goal in the 28th minute when she tallied her fourth goal of the season on a shot from over 30 yards out.
Carnell recorded her second assist of the contest in the 32nd minute when she fed Mary Kate Towne for a 20 yard blast that beat The Citadel keeper Angie Ellenwood. The Spartans held a 14-2 edge in first half shots while leading 8-0 in corner kicks.
Twin sisters Dacia and Deven Beachum accounted for UNCG’s fourth and fifth goals as the duo picked up scores just over six minutes apart. DeLaine notched her league-leading ninth assist of the season as she fed Dacia Beachum who laced a shot from 20 yards out to beat new keeper Brit Bunnell.
Cara Hammond recorded her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 64th minute on a shot five yards out after passes from Carnell and Dacia Beachum. After Sarah Burke scored The Citadel’s lone goal of the night, Carnell gave the homestanding Spartans a six point advantage, scoring on a shot from five yards out. DeLaine upped her league-best helper total to 10 as she tallied her second assist of the evening, giving her a total of six points for the contest.
Carolyn Lindsay capped off the scoring outbreak with her first goal of the season in the 78th minute. Carnell collected her fourth assist of the night as she sent a beautiful through ball just inside the box where Lindsay deposited it into the back of the Bulldogs’ net. UNCG outshot the Bulldogs 22-4 in the second half and held a 36-4 advantage for the game. The Spartans also took 11 corner kicks while The Citadel managed none.
Elon 2, Appalachian State 1, 2OT
BOONE, NC ? For the fourth time in the past five matches, Appalachian State University women’s soccer played extra time. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers have been denied a win all four times and Friday’s match against Elon proved to be no different as the Phoenix emerged with a 2-1 victory in two extra sessions.
With just 52 seconds left in the final overtime, Elon’s Jessica Hartman took a pass from Gillian Murray at the top of the box and knocked the gamewinner into the far corner for the team’s fifth win of the season. Appalachian ended regulation with similar theatrics with 1:10 left in the match as senior Jennipher Martin (Belmont, N.C./South Point) was fed the ball through the midfield by Dana Murphy (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) who kicked a low ball in past the out of position keeper from 25 yards out for the equalizer.
The Phoenix got its first goal courtesy of a defensive breakdown as the Mountaineers’ defense misplayed a deflected shot into their own net for the own goal. Despite the tied score at the end of regulation, both squads had many chances to score earlier in the match, but could not capitalize on the opportunities.
Appalachian held a 17-14 advantage in shots and an 8-6 lead in shots on goal. Elon’s goalkeeper, Lizz Johnson, made seven saves in goal, while her counterpart Megan Amorosi (Norfolk, Va./Maury) stopped four. ASU’s Whitney Southard (Brentwood, Tenn./Christ Presbyterian) led all players with six shots, three of them on goal. Elon improves to 5-10-2 on the season and 3-6-0 in Southern Conference action. Appalachian falls to 9-7-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the league.
