DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Dianna Thomas, Brittany Zahn, and Chrissy Finch each tallied double-digits in the kills department for Appalachian State, and the Davidson Wildcats Volleyball team fell 3-1 (30-28, 19-30, 7-30, 25-30) to the visiting Mountaineers Wednesday night in a Southern Conference tilt in Belk Arena. Davidson saw its two-match win streak come to an end, falling to 11-15 on the season and 7-5 in league play. Appalachian State continued its hot play, winning its seventh match in a row to improve to 17-7 overall and remain in second place in the SoCon at 10-2.

The night started out looking like Wildcats would halt the Mountaineers win streak by jumping out to a quick 9-5 lead in the first game on one of freshman Tierney Hodge’s (Gainesville, Fla.) career-high two service aces on the night. Davidson maintained its lead, pushing it out to as much as five-points, 26-21, when the Mountaineers’ Amy Lewis hit one into the net. Appalachian State tried to push the game into extra points by closing to within one, 29-28, but sophomore Kate Pierucci (Bakersfield, Calif.) hammered home the winning point as Davidson took a 1-0 lead in the match.

Unfortunately, that was all the highlights for the Davidson Wildcats as Appalachian State put an impressive run of games together to secure the match.

The Wildcat were held to a combined 26 points in the next two games as the Mountaineers hit .265 and .312 in games two and three for a 2-1 match lead.

In game four it looked like Davidson would force a game five, where they are 6-0 on the season, by opening up the contest on a 6-2 run. But such was not the case tonight. Davidson tied it up twice at 8-8 and 19-19, but Appalachian State put runs of 11-7 and 11-6 together throughout the match to close out the game with a 30-25 win and secure the match.

Davidson was paced in the kills category by Pierucci with 11 on the evening. It marked the first time in seven matches that the Wildcats did not place two or more players in double-digits in kills. Junior setter Jenna Dykstra (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) again paced the squad with 39 assists to go along with her eight digs.

The Mountaineers as a team hit a match-high .226, while coming up with 18 team blocks. Carla Durham and Amy Lewis each had six blocks apiece.

Davidson now hits the road for its next four matches starting with a match-up at Elon on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 4:00 p.m.
