Wofford 3, The Citadel 1
Charleston, SC - Senior middle blocker Marina Daniel led three Bulldogs in double digit kills with 16 and freshman setter Emily Hill had 42 assists but Wofford won games two and four by two points and three points, respectively, to down The Citadel, 3-1 (30-20, 32-30, 25-30, 30-27) in Southern Conference Volleyball action Sunday afternoon in McAlister Field House.
The Citadel (3-22, 0-13 SoCon), who led every game by at least five points, received 13 kills from freshman outside hitter Rachel Sanders and 12 kills from senior outside hitter Stefanie Farris. Defensively, Daniel led the Cadets with five total blocks (two solo), while Farris had 18 digs.
Wofford (10-11, 5-7 SoCon), was led on the attack by junior right side hitter Christal Carey with 17 kills. Senior right side hitter Katie Sobczyk added 12 kills and sophomore outside hitter Tory Macomson had 10 kills. Senior setter Rhea DeJesus had 43 assists. Defensively, the Terriers were led by senior middle blocker Angela Berry with five total blocks (two solo) while Carey and freshman libero Brittany Thompson recorded 19 digs each.
Wofford will face Mercer next Saturday in Spartanburg, while The Citadel will travel to Cullowhee to take on Western Carolina on Friday, October 28.
Davidson 3, Chattanooga 2
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Junior Liz Williamson (Austin Texas) and sophomore Kate Pierucci (Bakersfield, Calif.) each tallied a double-double, and the Wildcat Volleyball team won its second straight thrilling five-game match by earning a 3-2 win over the visiting Chattanooga Lady Mocs on Sunday, Oct. 23 in Belk Arena. Davidson moved into a tie for fourth place with Chattanooga in the SoCon with the win, bumping its record to 7-4 and 11-14 overall. The Wildcats also improved to 6-0 in five-game matches on the season. Chattanooga saw its conference record drop to 7-4 and its overall record to 12-11.
Game scores were 26-30, 30-19, 27-30, 30-20, 15-12.
Once again trailing 2-1 in the match going into the fourth game, Davidson rallied with a standout fourth game performance. The Wildcats saved their best hitting percentage of the match for this game by swinging at a .341 clip, finishing with 16 kills, while the Lady Mocs were held to a .137 hitting percentage. Davidson opened the game up on top, 13-9, before they secured the game with a 13-7 run to take a 26-17 lead and eventually the win.
Both teams fought hard for a lead in game five. There were nine lead changes to start the contest. Then tied at 10-10, Davidson made its move by getting back-to-back kills from freshman Kittery Neale (Gainesville, Fla.) and Pierucci to take a 12-10 lead. The Lady Mocs tried to close the gap at 12-11 with a kill by Bethany Herndon, but the Wildcats received two kills from Williamson and one by Neale in the end to secure the win and the match.
Game one saw both teams go back and forth early, until the Lady Mocs took the lead for good at 14-13 on a kill by Lindsay Galloway. Chattanooga finished game hitting a match-high .342 for the 30-26 win.
Davidson charged back in the second game with an early 9-4 lead. The Wildcats increased the lead to eight, 22-14, on a service ace by Williamson and later ended the game with another service ace, this time from senior Erin Balak (San Clemente, Calif.), for the 30-19 win.
Chattanooga hammered home a game-high 19 kills and hit .260 in game three for the 30-27 win.
Pierucci and Williamson had match highs in the kills department with 21 each. It was each players second and sixth 20-kill match of the season. Sophomore Lindsay Woeste (Dayton, Ohio) had a 20-dig match, coming up with 24 defensive digs as well as three service aces. The Wildcats as a team had 10 service aces and 10 blocks.
The Lady Mocs placed four players in double-digits in kills, led by Leslee Ball’s 16. Lindsay Galloway had a
double-double with 11 kills and 20 digs.
Davidson looks to continue its strong play of late when they play host to SoCon rival Appalachian State on Wed., Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers sit in second place in the SoCon with a 9-2 record.
Georgia Southern 3, Elon 1
Statesboro, Ga. -- The Georgia Southern volleyball team defeated the Elon Phoenix three games to one Sunday. The Eagles won the match 30-28, 30-26, 27-30 and 30-24.
Georgia Southern (16-8, 9-3) trailed for the majority of the first game and were down by as many as eight points before rallying back to take game one 30-28. Elon (6-16, 4-6) out hit the Eagles .233 to .219 and also recorded one more dig than Georgia Southern in the first game but the Eagles recorded three service aces which proved to be the difference. In the second game, the two teams exchanged leads back and forth with Georgia Southern taking over down the stretch and winning 30-26. The Phoenix again out hit the Eagles in the second game, hitting .324 to the Eagles .256. In the third game, the Phoenix held Georgia Southern to a match low .095 hitting percentage and won the game 30-27. In the fourth and final game, Georgia Southern hit a match high .345 and finished off the match with a 30-24 victory.
The Eagles were led in the match by a double-double from senior Iulia Porumbescu who had a match high 24 kills and recorded 13 digs. Sophomore Bailey Coleman and freshman Christy Dowd each recorded eight kills and junior Jennifer Charles recorded seven. Junior Jennifer Schenk led the match with six blocks, followed by Charles, Dowd, and sophomore Gorana Bacic each recording two blocks, and Coleman and senior Cristie Mitchell with one each. Junior Staci Anderson led the match in digs recording 16 and senior Natalia Galantini recorded a match high four aces. Galantini led the Eagles in assists with 25 with freshman Mae Chabra recording 17.
The Phoenix were led by Juliena Gigon who recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Emily Lucci led Elon in kills with 14 and Shelley MacBean led the team with 14 digs.
Georgia Southern will travel to Greenville, S.C on Saturday Oct. 29 to take on the Furman Paladins at 7 p.m. Elon will host the College of Charleston Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in Elon, N.C.
