Elon 5, Georgia Southern 1
ELON, NC - Alisa Petitt scored two goals and Gillian Murray scored once and recorded two assists to lead the Elon Phoenix to a 5-1 Southern Conference women’s soccer victory over visiting Georgia Southern from Rhodes Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Elon (4-10-2, 2-6-0 SoCon) got the scoring started early when Petitt sent a rebound of a Jaclyn Immordino shot into the net at 6:16. The goal was the third of the year for Petitt. The Phoenix scored its second goal at 10:26 when Kerri Speers scored for the sixth time this season. Murray’s cross to Speers was her first assist of the afternoon.
The Phoenix pushed the margin to 3-0 at 13:45 when Tina Longo’s free kick beat the keeper for her second score of the season. Petitt struck for her second goal of the day at 31:02 when she collected Murray’s cross and scored. Murray then found the back of the net for the second time this year at 43:01 to cap the five-goal half for Elon.
Georgia Southern (3-13-1, 2-6-0) eliminated the shutout at 86:16 when Ashley Toussaint scored unassisted - her fourth marker of the year.
Lizz Johnson went the distance in goal for Elon, making four saves. Megan Macdonald and Laura-Ashley Harris each went 45:00 in net for the Eagles making three and two saves respectively.
Elon owned a commanding 21-7 edge in total shots and a 10-5 margin in shots on goal. The Phoenix earned eight corners to three for the Eagles.
College of Charleston 4, The Citadel 0
MT. PLEASANT, SC - The College of Charleston scored two goals a minute apart early in the second half to secure the eventual 4-0 win over The Citadel in women’s soccer action this afternoon in front of 216 fans at Patriots Point Field.
The Cougars improve to 6-7-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the Southern Conference, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-15 and 0-9.
Colleen Hoban put the Cougars up at 49:22 after Charleston was fouled about 19 yards from the center of the net, setting up Hoban with the free kick which she put into the back left corner for the game-winner.
Just about a minute later at 50:25, Carolyn Morris passed to Teryn Schuetz, who was just outside the box to the right of the goal. Schuetz then crossed it to Kristin Rhyne, who headed it into the back of the net.
The third goal came at 68:15 off a corner kick by Danielle Jordan on the right side. Jordan crossed to Lou Hudson, who was just in front of the net. Her header sent the ball just over the line for the score.
Caroline Wertis netted the Cougars’ fourth goal at 69:44 after dribbling her way through traffic to just inside the box where she blasted the ball past the goalkeeper.
Charleston out-shot The Citadel 17-2, with the Bulldogs holding the 4-0 advantage in saves. Rhyne led the Cougars with four shots, while Miriam Crawford and Julie Austin paced the Bulldogs with one shot apiece.
Western Carolina 2, Chattanooga 0
CULLOWHEE, NC - On the strength of two goals by sophomore Lauren Atkinson, the Western Carolina women's soccer team recorded its tenth shutout of the season, blanking the Chattanooga Mocs, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
With the win, Western improves to 14-4-0 overall, 5-3-0 in the Southern Conference, while Chattanooga drops to 8-8-0 overall with an identical, 5-3-0, mark in league play.
Western got on the board midway through the first half. After one of Chattanooga's nine fouls in the game, freshman Arlan Whittle played a free kick on net. In traffic, senior Emily Pierce fired the rebound on goal, but it was deflected by the Moc defense. The scramble concluded as the rebound bounced to Atkinson who corralled the loose ball and put it in the left corner of the net for the score. Pierce was credited with the assist, her second of the season.
Shortly after the tally, Western nearly added its second goal of the game as junior Meghan Reilly won a ball and her shot hit the crossbar and bounced out. Just before the break, the Catamounts had another golden opportunity as Whittle, from her defensive position, dribbled in from midfield and passed a through ball to sophomore Heather Dittmer. However, Dittmer was just a step behind the defender before the ball was sent and was whistled for offsides. The Mocs missed several scoring opportunities as well, but Catamount defense deflected the ball away from the net.
Nine minutes into the second half, Western added its second goal of the afternoon. Senior Casey Davis fed a cross into the box, which was won by Atkinson. She turned and put a shot on goal. Her initial shot was saved by UTC's Stacey Matthiessen, but the rebound bounced out in front and Atkinson found the back of the net with it for her second goal of the match.
Western goal keeper, junior Alesha Row, earned her 10th shutout of the season, stopping seven Mocs shots in the process. Row, who entered the season with four shutouts to her credit, now ranks second on the WCU career charts with 14 scoreless affairs for her career, four behind all-time WCU leader, and former All-SoCon performer, Mandi Tinsley.
Overall, Chattanooga earned a slim advantage in shots, 19-18, after trailing at the break, 7-5. Atkinson led the Catamounts with five shots on the game, followed by senior Natalie Turgeon with three. The Mocs leading scorer, Diana Jallo, led Chattanooga with seven shots on the game, five of which came during the second half of the match.
Davidson 2, UNC Greensboro 2, 2OT
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Two crucial goals by Davidson senior Kara Koehrn late in the second half of Sunday’s Southern Conference women’s soccer match versus UNC Greensboro (8-5-1, 4-2-1 SoCon) led to overtime and an eventual 2-2 tie that kept the Wildcats’ unbeaten streak alive at 11 games. Davidson, now 11-4-2 on the season, remains atop the SoCon standing at 7-0-1 with today’s double-overtime draw.
The visiting Spartans opened the scoring in the 35th minute of play when Nicollette DeLaine dribbled around a Wildcat defender inside the box and crossed the ball to Cara Hammond at the far post for a one-touch finish. Riding a 1-0 advantage after the break, UNCG struck again at 59:51 on an unassisted goal by Karla Davis to go up, 2-0.
A Wildcat offense that registered just one shot in the first period came out firing after intermission and found its first goal in the 74th minute. The league’s leading scorer, Koehrn headed home a corner kick by freshman Mel Smith, cutting the Spartan lead in half and reviving the Davidson crowd with her 15th goal of the season.
With less than seven minutes to play in regulation, Koehrn single-handedly took control of the attack and beat a Spartan defender one-on-one to drill a 22-yard shot into the UNCG net past goalie Jennifer Stillman. Two scoreless overtime periods ensued, but Koehrn’s second goal was to be the last of the match.
The hard-fought contest yielded 27 total shots, including seven in extra periods, with Davidson claiming a slight edge overall, 14-13. In goal, Stillman made four saves in 110 minutes, while Wildcat sophomore Bevin English tallied five in the same span.
Furman 0, Wofford 0, 2OT
GREENVILLE, SC - Despite outshooting the Terriers 17-4, Furman tied Wofford 0-0 in an exciting match on Sunday evening. Andie Hinshaw made two saves for Furman to earn the shutout, her ninth of the year, tying her own single-season record. The shutout was also her sixth in the last seven matches. Wofford goalkeeper Bernie Sikes recorded seven saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season.
"We played well tonight; we just weren't able to convert a goal," said senior forward Andre'a Morrison. "We have seven days to recover, so we just need to get ready to play on Sunday against Greensboro."
Furman's first scoring chance came in the 29th minute as Katie Tucker sent a square pass into the penalty area. Emily Krankowski dummied the ball, and Kate Myatt sent a shot to the near post, but Wofford goalkeeper Bernie Sikes made a sliding save.
Tara Marker's shot from 35 yards in the 44th minute forced Sikes into another save.
Marker looked for her third goal in three matches in the 58th minute, but her header was inches above the crossbar.
Katherine Kelley's shot from 25 yards in the 76th minute forced Sikes into a leaping save.
Furman had another scoring chance in the 81st minute as Rachel Fry brought the ball into the Wofford penalty area. The freshman sent a looping shot toward goal, but Sikes was able to push the shot over the endline.
Regulation ended in a scoreless tie even though Furman held a commanding 14-4 lead in shots. Sikes recorded six saves in regulation to keep Wofford in the match.
Rachel Fry's rocketed shot from 20 yards out was just wide of the near post in the third minute of overtime.
Andre'a Morrison raced down the left sideline before cutting back into the penalty area. Her shot from 15 yards in the ninth minute of overtime was saved by Sikes.
Emotions ran high in the second overtime as Furman's Katie Tucker and Wofford's Ashley Worley were each sent off after a scuffle 35 yards from goal.
With time running out, Morrison looked to be taken down in the box after beating the last Wofford defender, but no penalty was awarded as time expired.
The tie moves Furman to 11-5-2 overall, 6-1-2 in the Southern Conference. Wofford's record goes to 4-10-2 on the season, 3-3-1 in conference play.
