Charleston, SC - Senior Marina Daniel paced The Citadel with 10 kills and freshman Emily Hill recorded 27 assists in the Bulldogs’ 3-0 loss to Elon Tuesday night in Southern Conference volleyball action in McAlister Field House.
Elon managed to squelch two late Bulldog rallies in games two and three to take the sweep. Phoenix sophomore Britany Westphal tallied 13 kills as junior Ashley Ruckert and sophomore Emily Lucci recorded 11 kills apiece. Senior setter Kate Hart registered 37 assists for Elon.
The Bulldogs will play their second match of a four game home stand on Thursday, October 20 as they take on Savannah State in McAlister Field House at 6 pm. Elon next travels to Statesboro, Ga. to face SoCon foe Georgia Southern on Sunday, October 23 at 1 pm.
Appalachian State 3, Georgia Southern 0
BOONE, N.C. ? Sophomore Brittany Zahn tied a career-high 17 kills as the Appalachian State University volleyball team swept Southern Conference-rival Georgia Southern to move into second place in the conference, Tuesday, at the Holmes Center.
With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 14-7 overall and 7-2 in SoCon action, while the Eagles drop to 14-8 overall and 7-3 in conference play. Appalachian jumps into a half-game lead over GSU in the conference.
Hitting percentage was key, as the Mountaineers recorded a .291 mark, holding the Eagles to just .026. Senior Stefanie Panzer (Mt. Gilead, N.C.) led the match with a .500 hitting percentage, tallying nine kills and no errors on 18 attacks. She added a season-high nine blocks on the night.
Appalachian’s solid blocking carried over from last weekend, as ASU out-blocked GSU, 26-14. The Eagles got points on the serve, recording seven aces, compared to the Mountaineers’ three.
Zahn (Charlotte, N.C.) hit .343 on the night (17 kills, five errors, 35 total attacks). She added two block assists. Chrissy Finch (Lake Zurich, Ill.) was just one kill shy of a double-double, as the junior recorded 13 digs and nine kills, as she finished the night with a .421 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Lorelle Rau (Oakland Park, Fla.) compiled 35 set assists for the Mountaineers. The 6-1 setter added seven total blocks, including ASU’s lone solo block. Senior Kali Rumberger (Spokane, Wash.) tied a match high with 15 digs from the libero position.
In just two games for the Eagles, Iulia Porumbescu led GSU with nine kills. Bailey Coleman added eight kills, while Staci Anderson and Natalia Galantini reached double-digits in digs, recording 15 and 11, respectively.
The two teams opened the match with each serving into the net. The Mountaineers then jumped out to a 5-1 lead behind the serving of Becky Sorensen (Raleigh, N.C.). ASU never looked back, leading by as many as 14, to win game one, 30-18.
The Mountaineers had to claw back from a 17-11 deficit in game two, taking their first lead of the game at 30-29. ASU won match-point, winning game two, 31-29.
Game three was another hard-fought battle. Down 16-11, the Mountaineers took a 17-16 lead behind the solid serving of Charissa Clearman (Austin, Texas), forcing an Eagle timeout. Clearman rattled off two more points, and Appalachian never trailed again in the match, going on to win game three, 30-22, and the match, 3-0.
The Mountaineers remain at home this weekend as they take on Western Carolina Friday and Chattanooga Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. at the Holmes Center and can be heard live at www.GoASU.com.
Chattanooga 3, Western Carolina 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Senior Lindsay Galloway garnered her tenth double-double of the season to lead the Lady Mocs to a 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 30-24) sweep over Western Carolina at Maclellan Gym Tuesday night. The win was Chattanooga coach Lisa Rhodes 200th at the university.
Galloway tied a season-high with 20 kills and also had 14 digs. Galloway also hit a team high .375 for the match. The Lady Mocs (12-9, 7-2 SoCon) ran out to a 6-0 lead in the first game only to watch the Catamounts (6-17, 5-6 SoCon) come roaring back. WCU led the game 28-27, but Chattanooga managed the last three points of the game to win 30-28.
The Catamounts got out to an early lead in the second game and appeared to have a 20-14 lead after a Chattanooga hitting error. A WCU player was called for net interference and instead of a 20-14 lead the score was now 19-15. That point started an 8-0 run for the Lady Mocs that featured three Galloway kills. At the end of the run, the Lady Mocs held a 22-19 advantage and would never look back Lindsay Galloway put a exclamation point on the game by scoring kills on the last three Chattanooga points.
The third game started with a 6-1 advantage for the Lady Mocs. The Catamounts rallied to tie the game at eight, before Michaela Huff served two straight aces to give Chattanooga a 10-8 lead, which it would never relinquish. The sweep was the Lady Mocs third straight over a conference opponent. Chattanooga had not swept three straight Southern Conference opponents since 1999.
Leslee Ball, Sarah Bass, and Kari Wiedinger each tallied eight kills for the Lady Mocs. Bethany Herndon had 23 set assists, while Huff had 22. Lara Newberry led the Chattanooga defense with 22 digs. Kelsey Amundson had 10 digs to go with Galloway’s 14.
Meredith Harmon led the Catamounts with 15 kills. Meghan Boyle tallied 26 set assists.
With her 200th UTC win, Rhodes becomes the only coach in the history of the Southern Conference to reach that many wins at a conference school. Rhodes is now only three wins shy of 300 overall on her career.
The Lady Mocs will hit the road for their next three matches. They will face Appalachian State on Saturday night in Boone, N.C. The match will start at 7:00 p.m.
College of Charleston 3, Coastal Carolina 1
Rebecca Wieters tallied 18 kills, while TIffany Blum and Amanda Timmers added 15 to lead the College of Charleston volleyball team to the 3-1 (28-30, 30-23, 30-25, 30-27) win over Coastal Carolina tonight in Conway, S.C.
Coastal Carolina is now 11-8, while the College of Charleston rose to 19-1 overall.
In game one, the Lady Chants went on a 5-0 streak before CofC could get on the board. After a kill from Rebecca Wieters the Cougars got on the board and had a three-point run. CCU then continued to control the close game and clinch the 30-28 win. The second game was controlled early by the Cougars. CofC had a 28-18 lead when a kill by Katherine Jensen-Spencer (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary/Mississippi) got the Lady Chants back into the game. After a four-point run, CCU could not hold on and the Cougars went on to win the second game 30-23.
The College of Charleston attacked early in the third game and had a 15-10 lead when CCU’s Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy ) fought back with a kill and led the Lady Chants as they slightly closed the gap. The Cougars continued to dominate the third game at 26-17 until CCU went on a five-point streak. C of C battled with the Lady Chants and won the third game, 30-25.
In the fourth and final game of the match, the Cougers continued to dominate the game not letting Coastal have more than a three point lead. A kill from Wieters led the Cougars on a four-point streak as they took off and defeated the Lady Chants 30-27.
Leading CCU was Jensen-Spencer who recorded her 13th double-double with 15 kills and 24 digs. Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro ) marked 45 assists in CCU’s effort as well as six kills and 11 digs. Obert added 12 kills and Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro ) tallied 10 for the Lady Chants.
