GREENVILLE, S.C. - Furman’s Lady Paladin volleyball team fell to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in the Southern Conference with a 3-1 (30-26, 30-24, 31-29, 30-28) loss to Appalachian State Saturday in Alley Gym.

The Mountaineers rolled up 18.0 team blocks in holding the Lady Paladins to a .150 hitting percentage in the match. Amy Lewis tallied one block solo and eight block assists to pace ASU, while Diana Thomas added seven block assists and middle Stefanie Panzer tallied three block solos and six block assists.

Furman hitting was led by Whitney Purser and Chibuzo Aguocha, who each tallied 20 kills while Ally Hock added 15 and had the best hitting percentage of the three, with a .229 mark. Purser added 13 digs in the effort while Kim Tonkin paced the Lady Paladins with 18. Middle hitter Kerry Wooten topped Furman’s net defense with five block assists.

After falling easily in the first two games, Furman surged ahead early in game three and took a 20-15 advantage before ASU come back and evened the score at 28. The Mountaineers took a 29-28 advantage on an Aguocha error, but the sophomore from Houston, Texas, tallied a kill on the next rally to even the score at 29. An ASU attacking error followed by a Kerry Wooten kill secured the victory for the Lady Paladins.

Game four stayed even until 14 all, when ASU went on an 8-2 run and pulled ahead 22-16. Furman responded to tie the score at 26 and pulled ahead by one on another Aguocha kill, but Stefanie Panzer served the last three points of the game to earn the 30-28 Mountaineer victory.

With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in Southern Conference action. They will face Wofford on Sunday in Spartanburg at 2 p.m.

Georgia Southern 3, The Citadel 0

Statesboro, Ga. -- The Georgia Southern volleyball team bounced back from Friday night’s defeat to sweep The Citadel, Saturday at Hanner Fieldhouse. The Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 30-17, 30-22, and 30-19.

Georgia Southern (13-4, 7-2) jumped to an early 5-0 lead over The Citadel (2-19, 0-10) in game one and went on to out hit the Bulldogs .500 to .129 to win the game 30-17. In the second game, the Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 30-22 behind four of freshman Christy Dowd’s seven aces in the match. In the game, Georgia Southern held The Citadel to a -.025 hitting percentage. In the third game, sophomore Bailey Coleman recorded seven of her match high 14 kills to lead the Eagles to a 30-19 win.

Georgia Southern was led in the match by Coleman, who recorded 14 kills to hit .448 and recorded six digs. Dowd, in addition to her team season high seven aces, tallied eight kills, nine digs and hit .316. Junior Jennifer Charles, who had six kills, led the team with three blocks, followed by sophomore Gorana Bacic and Dowd who each recorded two blocks, and junior Jennifer Schenk and Coleman each recorded one block. Senior Natalia Galantini, who finished the match with seven digs, led the Eagles with 20 assists and freshman Mae Chabra recorded 13 assists and also tallied two aces. Senior Cristie Mitchell finished the match with five kills and junior libero Staci Anderson recorded seven digs.

The Citadel was led by Stefanie Farris who recorded eight kills and Ashley Winter recorded a match high 12 digs.

"I was really pleased with our play today," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "Christy Dowd has really played well this season in her backup role and I was very impressed with her role as a starter today. She played good offensively, defensively, and served the ball tremendously. She is going to be a really good player."

Georgia Southern will travel to Boone, N.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 18 to take on Appalachian State at 6 p.m. The Citadel will head to Elon, N.C. to face Elon Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m.

Davidson 3, Wofford 1

The Wofford volleyball team held leads in three of the four games but could only muster a win in game three before falling, 3-1, Saturday night in the Benjamin Johnson Arena to visiting Davidson. The Wildcats took the Southern Conference match by scores of 30-17, 31-29, 22-30 and 30-24.

Davidson jumped out early and never looked back as it was in solid control throughout game one. In game two, the Terriers mounted an eight-point advantage, 16-8, before the Wildcats rallied and capitalized in the game win.

After the 10-minute break, Wofford showed new energy and held off another Davidson attempt at a comeback before claiming the triumph. Davidson overcame an early deficit in game four to claim the match win in game four.

All-SoCon setter Jenna Dykstra paced all players with a .353 hitting percentage on 10 kills and 17 total attacks. She also had a match-high 44 assists.

Joining her as Wildcat teammates with double-digit kills were Tierney Hodge with 13, while Katie Pierucci added 12 and Liz Williamson posted 11. Williamson had a team-high 42 total attacks, nine more than Hodge’s 33.

Lindsey Woeste paced the visitors with 25 digs. Davidson (9-13, 5-3 SoCon) also received solid blocking numbers, registering 13.0 as a team, including three solo stops.

Pacing the Terrier effort was junior Christal Carey with 15 kills and 52 total attacks. She also had 14 digs for a double-double and tied teammate Tory Macomson with two service aces.

Brittany Thompson tallied 14 kills on 44 total attacks and added 16 digs for a double-double of her own.

Setter Rhea DeJesus led Wofford (9-9, 4-5 SoCon) with a team-high .176 hitting percentage on five kills and 17 total attacks to go with 36 assists.

Freshman Liz Sheets posted the Terriers’ lone solo block of the night.

Wofford will resume its season at 2 p.m. Sunday with a home match against Appalachian State. The Wildcats will play at the same time at Furman in Greenville, S.C.

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina fought off five game points in the third frame to take a 2-1 lead over the visiting Elon Phoenix, but could not capitalize on that momentum, falling in five games, 3-2 (30-21, 22-30, 32-34, 30-18, 15-11) Saturday night in Southern Conference volleyball action in historic Reid Gym.

Led by junior Heather Koontz’ team-high 15 kills, Western had three players record double-doubles. Koontz added 10 digs and three block assists in the losing effort. Senior Ellie Talbot killed a dozen while recording a match-high 25 digs and Koontz’ classmate, setter Meghan Boyle, rounded out the double-double trio with 45 set assists and 12 digs, also adding three block assists.

Another bright spot for the Catamounts was the play of junior transfer, Krista Neumann. The Downers Grove, Ill., native recorded 13 kills with just two errors for a .379 attack percentage. Libero Kate Willard finished with 20 digs on the night.

Elon grabbed the early advantage, taking game one by a count of 30-21, out hitting the Catamounts .333-to-.053. As the two teams traded ends of the court, fortunes did not seem to swap as it was Western hitting over .300 in the second game while the Phoenix were saddled with nine attack errors. The Cats evened things up at one game apiece with the 30-22 tally.

After the break, WCU (5-16, 4-5 SoCon) appeared to be in control of game three before the Phoenix rose to the occasion, rallying from three-point, 9-6, deficit to score the next nine points in the match to take a 15-9 lead. Western managed to chip away at the lead, but never could manage it below a four-point cushion which Elon enjoyed the majority of the set. Facing game point, at 29-24, Western rattled off five-consecutive points behind the serve of Neumann to tie the game at 29 apiece. The seesaw battle continued past regulation, with the Catamounts squeezing out the win on back-to-back Talbot kills.

Coming off the emotional win in the third frame, offensive woes reemerged in game four as Western only managed nine kills while committing eight errors for a dismal, .032, attack percentage. Conversely, Elon killed 17 with just five errors (.308) to even the match and force the decisive game five.

In the rally fifth, the Catamounts fell behind 7-3 before mounting consecutive points pulled them within two, 7-5. Elon responded with a trifecta of its own to pull ahead by five, 10-5. Western would again close to within two on a Neumann kill, 11-9, but the Phoenix scored four of the final six points for the 15-11 game five and match win.

As a team, Western out blocked the Phoenix, 11-to-9, but Elon out hit the Catamounts overall, .262-to-.199.

Elon (5-14, 3-4 SoCon) was paced by sophomore Emily Lucci with a match-high 20 kills and 11 digs in the double-double effort. Senior Kate Hart dished out 65 assists and tallied 10 digs, while sophomore Brittany Westphal finished with 19 kills and 10 digs for another Phoenix double-double.

The Catamounts have a short turnaround, returning to action on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm in the Ramsey Center against the UNC Greensboro Spartans. Western has won 14-consecutive matches versus UNCG entering the Sunday afternoon matinee

Chattanooga 3, UNC Greensboro 0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lady Mocs swept a Southern Conference match for the second straight night with a 30-13, 30-22, 30-22 win over UNC-Greensboro Saturday evening.

The win is Chattanooga’s third consecutive in SoCon play and raises the Lady Mocs record to 11-9 overall and 6-2 against league foes, good for third place in the conference. The Spartans drop to 2-17 and 1-8.

Lindsey Galloway led the attack for the Lady Mocs with 14 kills, while hitting a season-best 48.1 percent. Kelly Ramsay and Julianna Martinez both added eight kills. The Lady Mocs had a hitting percentage of .379 for the match, their most efficient of the season. Bethany Herndon dished 27 set assists and added four service aces.

Defensively for Chattanooga, Lara Newberry had 18 digs and Kelsey Amundson tallied a season-high 17. Galloway was one dig shy of a double-double, but her nine brought her career total to 1,322 which moved her into third place on the all-time list. The Lady Mocs held Greensboro to a .083 hitting percentage, the lowest of any conference opponent on the season.

Hilary Overby’s 12 kills were tops for the Spartans. Adrian Hicks garnered 30 set assists and Alysia Rosvold had 10 digs. Overby also served up two aces for Greensboro.
