The Phoenix struck for the game’s first goal only 4:14 into the contest when Susannah Gianakos took a Katie Persichini pass and scored for the third time this year.

UTC answered right back when Ida Marie Froseth scored her first goal of the season off a Lisa Becht assist at 5:58.

The game remained scoreless until Jallo scored the game-winner.

The Lady Mocs launched 21 total shots, six of which were on frame. Elon took nine shots, including five on goal.

Elon’s Amy Cahill made four saves while playing the entire 90 minutes. UTC’s Stacey Matthiessen also made four stops while going the distance.

UNC Greensboro 3, Georgia Southern 0

GREENSBORO, NC ? Posting its third consecutive home shutout in Southern Conference action, the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team defeated Georgia Southern 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.  The Spartans have outscored their last three home opponents by a 10-0 tally.

In a contest which was completely controlled by the Spartans (8-5-0, 4-2-0 SoCon), Shannon Donavan opened the Spartan scoring with her second goal of the season in the 29th minute of play.  After a Georgia Southern (3-11-1, 2-4-0 SoCon) foul on their end of the field, Donovan took a pass from Emilie Stewart and sent a one touch blast from 25 yards out past GSU keeper Megan Macdonald.

Making her first career start, freshman Becca Voss scored her first career goal in the 32nd minute to extend UNCG’s lead to a two goal advantage.  Defender Amanda Zimmerman sent a service to the feet of Voss where the Raleigh, NC native beat Macdonald with a shot from over 30 yards out.  UNCG fired 16 first half shots and limited the visiting Eagles to but one while also holding a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Spartans added a third goal late in the second half when senior Cara Hammond collected her team-leading fifth goal of the campaign.  The Howell, NJ product found the back of the net off a feed from Donovan off another Spartan free kick.  From 25 yards out, Donovan sent a ball into the box where Hammond fired a header at new GSU keeper Laura-Ashley Harris.  Harris managed to make a blocking save on the ball back into the field of play, but Hammond stuck with the play and this time headed her rebound into the Eagles’ net.

UNCG once again completely controlled all the play in the second half as the Spartans connected for 14 shots while allowing just five from GSU.  The Spartans outshot Georgia Southern 30-6 for the game and held a 17-1 advantage in corner kicks.

In goal, Katherine Ryan made her third start of the season in goal and collected three saves.  The Pittsboro, NC native has recorded shutouts in two of her three games started.  In UNCG’s 2-1 loss to Old Dominion, Ryan went the first 19 minutes of the contest without surrendering a goal before leaving with an injury.  The sophomore keeper has now gone 199:19 minutes without allowing a goal.

Furman 1, Appalachian State 0, OT

BOONE, NC - The Appalachian State women’s soccer squad endured its third-straight overtime match and for the third time couldn’t come away with the win as Furman University prevailed, 1-0, on a header from Tara Maker in the 97th minute Sunday, October 16 in Southern Conference action at the ASU Soccer Stadium.

The win moves Furman to 9-5-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the SoCon. The Mountaineers fall to 9-5-1 and 2-4-1 in league action. Furman held a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal, but was kept in the match courtesy of freshman Megan Amorosi’s (Norfolk, Va./Maury) outstanding play as she recorded eight saves, including three in the final three minutes of regulation to force overtime.

Appalachian had two opportunities to get on the board in the second half, the first coming in the 66th minute as Whitney Southard (Brentwood, Tenn./Christ Presbyterian) tried to put the ball into the upper far corner from five yards out. However, Southard got under the ball too much as the open shot hit the crossbar and bounced harmlessly over the goal. With just under seven minutes left in regulation, Dana Murphy (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) waited by the open far post for a cross from Southard. Murphy came just inches away from heading the ball into the open corner as the cross sailed high.

The Paladins controlled much of the overtime period, keeping the ball in ASU’s half of the field . The Paladins were awarded a corner kick with three minutes remaining in the period. Gena Villari set up the near corner for the kick and aimed at the near post where Marker waited for the game-winning header. The score was her second of the season.

Wofford 1, College of Charleston 0

SPARTANBURG, SC - Junior Bernie Sikes continued her hot streak in league play as the Wofford women's soccer team knocked off College of Charleston, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action at Snyder Field.

Sikes, who started the year as a field player but has since been forced to play in goal due to a season-ending injury to starter Austin Somers, collected eight saves for her third shutout victory in SoCon action. Sikes has an overall 3-2-1 record in the cage, including a 3-0-1 mark in her last four games since taking over the keeper duties full-time after splitting minutes with fellow field player Sarah Goolsby.

Classmate Jessica Connett tallied the game's only goal just before halftime at 44:18. Sophomore Traci Lynch drove down the right side, then turned at the far post and found a streaking Connett in the box. Connett then laid the ball into the back of the net past Cougar goalkeeper Erin Smith.

Connett tied teammates Whitney Steelman and Kelly Broderick with three shots apiece to lead Wofford (4-9-1, 3-2 SoCon) to its first victory over College of Charleston since the last meeting in Spartanburg, Sept. 16, 2003. In that contest, the Terriers again won 1-0 but used overtime to decide the contest.

Broderick was facing her sister Megan, a starting forward for the Cougars, in today's match. Megan only posted one shot on the afternoon.

Leading the Charleston (4-6-2, 3-1-2) attack was three shots from Kristin Rhyne, while Colleen Hoban's two attempts was the only other multi-shot outing by a Cougar.

Smith stopped six Terrier shots in playing the full 90 minutes in the cage.

Western Carolina 2, The Citadel 1

CULLOWHEE, NC - Western Carolina sophomore Lauren Atkinson came through with two assists, one to Tammy Jones and one to Meghan Reilly, to lead the Catamounts to a 2-1 decision over The Citadel Sunday afternoon in women's soccer action at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

With just over seven minutes left before the break, Western took advantage of one of its nine corner kicks in the match. Freshman Arlan Whittle served the ball into the goal box, which Atkinson settled and Jones finished for her first goal of the season.

Reilly took the pass, beat a defender and fired a shot from the upper left corner of the goal box past Bulldog keeper Angie Ellenwood. It marked the first goal scored of the season for the junior from Texas.

Atkinson led Western with six shots, followed by senior Casey Davis with four shots on the afternoon, while Natalie Turgeon, Jones and Buki Baruwa each had two shots. For The Citadel, Holly Know had two of its four shots, while Lauren Merchant added one.
