SoCon Women's Cross Country Capsules for Oct. 14th-16th

October 17, 2005 - Citadel Women Team-up for Fourth; Holmes Leads The Citadel Men at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, SC - Freshman Megan Jenkins finished 15th overall with a time of 15:38 and the top five Bulldogs all had times under 17 minutes as The Citadel's women's cross country team finished fourth out of 14 teams at the Winthrop Fall Classic over the weekend.

In addition to Jenkins, freshman Sarah Strickland also turned in a sub-16 finish with a time of 15:48 to take 20th. Freshman Erin Ritter and junior Laura Hewston finished 29 and 32 respectively with Ritter turning in a 16:12 and Hewston a 16:19. Freshman Caitlin Lincer rounded out the top five for the Cadets with a 16:49. At four kilometers, the women's race was just over two miles.

"The women had on of the best team races that we have ever had," Said head coach Jody Huddleston. "Megan and Sarah ran the second and third fastest 4K times in school history.

"Caitlin really enjoyed the shorter distance and really helped us be able to finish in the fourth position as a team."

Sophomore Matt Holmes led the men's team to a ninth place finish out of 14 teams as he posted a time of 19:55 over the 6K distance. Junior Will Wilson finished second for the Dogs with a 20:37. He was followed by Robert Isaac and Ray Giustizia. Six kilometers is just under four miles.

"We like to race a shorter distance in our final tune-up for the conference championships," said Huddleston. "We will take next weekend off and hopefully be ready for a good race."

Georgia Southern will host the Southern Conference Championships on October 30 in Statesboro.

October 15, 2005 - Paladins, Lady Paladins Second At Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C.?The Furman men’s and women’s cross country teams both grabbed second place finishes at Saturday’s Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.

Senior Tyler Johnson recorded a time of 18:58.10 in the men’s 6K race to finish second behind VMI’s Donnie Mickels.  Eric Albrecht and Sam Robinson finished eighth and ninth, respectively, to round out Furman’s trio of top 10 finishers.

Brittany Thompson scored a tenth place finish for the Lady Paladins and sophomore Page Bridges placed 12th with times of 15:18.80 and 15:24.00, respectively.  Campbell edged Furman for team honors in the women’s 4K event.

The Furman cross country teams are idle until October 30, when they take part in the Southern Conference Championships in Statesboro, Ga.

October 14, 2005 - WCU Cross Country Competes at Blue Ridge Open Meet in Boone

BOONE, N.C. - After two weeks off, the Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams returned to action Friday to participate in the Blue Ridge Open Meet, hosted by Appalachian State.

Big 12 power and ninth-ranked Texas, who took seven of the top eight spots individually, won the men's 8k, while Davidson claimed the team title for the women's 5k. Appalachian State was runner-up for both the men's and women's races and was able to win the cross country teams' Old Mountain Jug with Western claiming seventh place on the men's side and 10th on the women's side.

Individually, junior Dan Fassinger led the Western, marking the third time this season he has been the first Catamount to cross the finish line. Fassinger completed the course in 25:29.1 to place 12th. He was followed by Adam Puett, who placed 17th with a time of 25:42.

For the WCU women, Kerrie Savery led the Cats for the second consecutive race. The sophomore from Palm Harbor, Fla., finished 31st with a time of 19:58.1. Senior Deanna Kulesz was the second Catamount to cross the finish line, placing 48th with a time of 20:26.5.

Both the men's and women's teams will have next week off before traveling to Statesboro, Ga., for the annual Southern Conference Championships, held on Sunday, Oct. 30.

October 15, 2005 - Cross Country Runs In Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. - In their last meet before the Southern Conference Championships, the Georgia Southern Cross Country team totaled 217 points and placed ninth overall Saturday morning, (Oct. 15th) in the Winthrop Invitational.

The 4K race, run at Winthrop Farm, saw 15 total women’s teams compete. The Eagles averaged a time of 16:53.92 for a total six-runner tally of 1:24:29.60.

Senior Brittney Jett remained the top Eagle finisher, placing 17th overall with a time of 15:33.70. Sophomore Abby Bloom was next to the finish with a time of 16:02.50, for 29th overall. Junior Jessica Kerzie completed the race in 16:26.70 for 45th place overall.

Campbell University won the women’s side of the Invitational with 32 points and a total time of 1:14:40.00. Furman University and host school Winthrop took the second and third overall spots, respectively. Independent runner Stephanie Pezzullo was the top female runner, clocking a time of 13:59.20.

The Eagle runners will have a week off to prepare for the Southern Conference Championships, scheduled for Sunday, October 30th at 9:00 am at Southern Links Golf Course in Statesboro.

October 15, 2005 - CofC Cross Country Finishes 5th and 7th at Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The College of Charleston's women's cross country team finished 5th, while the men's placed 7th at the 2005 Winthrop Invitational Meet on Saturday.

The women's race consisted of 15 teams and was a 4K event, while the men saw 14 teams run a 6K course.

Aubrey Darnell led the Cougars finishing 18th with a time of 19:46.20. Harrison Johnson was 20th with a time of 19:52.00.  The women's top finisher was Wells Trompeter who ran the event in a time of 15:30.00 (14th).

The Cougars will compete at the Southern Conference Championships October 30th.

October 14, 2005 - Flynn Paces Elon to Sixth-Place Finish

BOONE, N.C.- Anna Mae Flynn ran to a 15th-place finish to lead the Elon women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the Blue Ridge Open hosted by Appalachian State.

Flynn ran to a time of 19:20.1 and finished 14th among college runners. Alana Black placed 21st with a time of 19:32.0 while Katelyn Ealer finished 32nd with a time of 20:01.7. Jessica Doan ran a time of 20:28.1 for a 49th-place finish and Kelly Chencharik placed 59th with a 20:40.4 time to round out Elon's top-five.

Alissa Wilke posted a time of 20:52.7 for a 65th-place finish and Carolina Corbyons finished 77th with a time of 21:14.9 and Colleen McCarthy posted a time of 21:19.5 for a 78th-place finish. Grace Ilevbare ran a time of 21:43.1 for a 94th-place finish and Marisa Pinero posted a time of 22:26.4 and a 104th-place finish. Alana Morro (22:28.9/105th) and Casey Pike (23:00.0/113th) completed Elon's field.

The squad placed sixth with 154 points. Davidson won the meet with 38 points while Appalachian State finished second (70 points) and High Point placed third (104 points).

Elon returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Southern Conference Championship in Statesboro, Ga.

October 15, 2005 - Appalachian Women Second at Blue Ridge Open

BOONE, N.C. ? Junior Kasey Smith led the Mountaineers as the Appalachian State University women’s cross country team finished second out of 11 teams Friday at the Blue Ridge Open held at the State Farm Cross Country Course in Boone. Davidson took the women’s team title with a total time of 1:33:46.70 and 38 points on the 5k course.

The Appalachian women finished 32 points behind the Wildcats with a total time of 1:36:16.20 and 70 points. High Point landed in third with 104 points (1:37:56.4), followed by UNC Greensboro in fourth with 140 points (1:39.31.70), UNC Wilmington in fifth with 144 points (1:39:03.90), Elon in sixth with 154 points (1:40:02.30) and South Carolina in seventh with 158 points (1:40:30.90).

Mars Hill (eighth, 205 points), Gardner Webb (ninth, 228 points), Western Carolina (10th, 236 points) and King (11th 280 points) rounded out the competition.

Brenna Burns and Allie Martin finished one-two for Davidson, as Burns ran the course in 18:01.3 and Martin finished in 18:19.8. Burns’ time ranks as the 15th-best at the State Farm Fields.

Smith (Walnut Cove, N.C.) recorded her best time of the season with an 18:36.0 mark, finishing fifth behind Marissa Murtaugh of UNC Wilmington in third (18:26.9) and Kali Burt to High Point in fourth (18:34.5).

Meghan Gaffney (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) and Hannah Parks (Kernersville, N.C.) joined Smith in the top-10 for the Mountaineers. Gaffney finished seventh with a time of 18:50.6, while Parks followed in ninth with a time of 19:03.7.

The Mountaineers close out home competition Saturday, hosting the State Farm Open at 9 a.m. The 5k run is open to the public. Anyone wanting to participate is welcome to run.

October 15, 2005 - UNCG women fourth, men 10th at Blue Ridge Open meet

 

BOONE, NC ? On the strength of four Top 25 finishes, UNC Greensboro’s women’s cross country team finished fourth, while its men finished 10th at the Blue Ridge Open on Friday evening.

 

Jess Weber finished 16th, Heidi Pinkerton 20th and Stephanie Maltais 25th to lead the UNCG women. Weber’s time of 19:22.4 was a season best for her, as was Pinkerton’s time of 19:28.0. Maltais’ time of 19:45.2 was a personal best. In addition, Mary Ann Rutz’s time of 20:24.7, good for 45th place, was also a season best.

 

On the men’s side, Charles Gibson finished in 42nd place with a time of 26:55.0 to lead UNCG.

 

“The women really came together and had an outstanding meet with several running season and lifetime best performances,” said UNCG cross country coach Rachelle Roberts. “Hopefully this will set us up for a solid showing at the SoCon Championships in two weeks.

 

“It was a tough meet for the men but they will be ready to race in two weeks when it counts,” said Roberts.

 

Texas won the men’s race with eight of its runners among the first nine collegiates to cross the finish link. Davidson won the women’s race.

 

UNCG will next run on October 30 at the Southern Conference Championships in Statesboro, GA.

 

October 15, 2005 - Mayne, Wommack Pace UTC in FrontRunner

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Chattanooga’s Shannon Wommack and Ian Mayne continue to roll with first place finishes at the Chattanooga FrontRunner Cross Country Invitational at Moccasin Bend Saturday afternoon.

With temperatures in the 80s, a bit warm for mid-October, Wommack ran the two mile course in a time of 10:48. The Lady Mocs finished first and placed six in the top 10 out of 41 runners with senior Ellen Davis the second Chattanooga runner to cross the line at 11:26.

Katie Williams and Sabrina Lefort were fourth and fifth and Suzanne Walker was seventh. Ashley Meagher placed 10th and Mallorie Williams was 12th for the Lady Mocs.

Mayne and Jeff Taylor paced the men to a first place finish on their home 5K course. Mayne’s top place time was 15:11 and Taylor was second at 15:27. Transfer Michael Mentz was the third Moc across the line at 16:04 good for fourth place. Linas Salkauskas finished sixth and Kevin Huwe placed eighth.

Middle Tennessee took second in both races. Ashley Comstock, one of three Blue Raiders in the top 10, was third overall in a time of 11:30. In the men’s race, Jonathan Guillou was third at 15:49 and Derek Bell placed fifth for Middle Tennessee at 16:07.

West Georgia was third, Austin Peay fourth, Tennessee State fifth and Fisk was sixth in the women’s race. Austin Peay was third in the men’s race followed by West Georgia in fourth.

Unattached Chattanooga runners Lanni Marchant and Nettie Halcomb finished near the top as well. Marchant was behind Wommack with a time of 11:02 placing second overall and Nettie Halcomb, also running unattached, was fifth at 11:40. On the men’s side, former Chattanooga runner Steven Kocsis came on strong in the second half of the race to place fourth overall at 15:55.

Chattanooga will take a break in preparation for the Southern Conference Championships Oct. 30 in Statesboro, Ga.

 

October 14, 2005 - Burns, Martin Lead Cross Country to Top Team Finish at Blue Ridge Open

BOONE, N.C. ? Davidson sophomore Brenna Burns turned in the top 5K time at Appalachian State’s Blue Ridge Open, followed by senior teammate Allie Martin in second, to lead the Wildcat women to a first-place team finish on Friday evening.

The host Mountaineers came in second, two-and-a-half minutes off Davidson’s combined time of 1:33:46. UNC Greensboro (fourth), Elon (sixth) and Western Carolina (10th) were the other Southern Conference programs competing at the meet.

Burns, the Southern Conference’s September Runner of the Month, posted a time of 18:01.3, 18.5 seconds ahead of Martin. The co-captains have paced the Wildcats all season with the team’s top two individual finishes at three previous meets.

Sophomore Megal Atias came in sixth at 18:47.7, while freshman Caroline Sanker and sophomore Brittany Crawford took 14th and 17th, respectively, to round out the top five Davidson finishers.

On the men’s side, Davidson raced to a sixth-place team finish with Jonathan Baker crossing the finish line 28th to lead the Wildcat pack. Freshman Lance Harden turned in the team’s second-best time, and senior Austin Mercadante rounded out the top three.

Texas won the men’s team competition.

Next, both the Davidson men and women make their final preparations for the SoCon Championships, slated for October 30 in Statesboro, Ga.

October 15, 2005 - Lister paces Terrier women's cross country Saturday

Led by junior Ryn Lister, the Wofford women's cross country team placed 11th out of 15 schools Saturday at the Asics/Winthrop Fall Classic in Rock Hill, S.C.

Lister ran to a 50th-place time of 16:30.10 to pace the Terriers. Freshman Justina Oliva recorded a 66th-place result of 16:58.80, while senior Corey Wilson finished 87th with a time of 17:54.00.

Senior Ashley Adamson notched a 95th-place time of 18:16.60, while junior Mandy Mills finished the Wofford scorers with an 100th-place result of 18:25.20.

Also competing for the Terriers was freshman Sarah Whitener. She registered an 104th-place time of 18:59.20.

Stephanie Pezzullo, an unattached competitor, won the individual title with a time of 13:59.20 in the 4k race. Campbell won the team crown with a score of 32, while Wofford earned a team tally of 313.

The Terriers will next compete Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Southern Conference Championship in Statesboro, Ga.
