College of Charleston 3, Georgia Southern 0
Statesboro, Ga. -- The Georgia Southern volleyball team lost three games to none Friday night to College of Charleston. Charleston won the three games 30-24, 30-13, and 30-20.
In the first game, Georgia Southern (13-7, 6-2) jumped to an early 19-15 lead before Charleston (18-1, 10-0) won the final 15 of 21 points to win the game 30-24. The Eagles out dug the Cougars 20-17 in the game but Charleston out hit Georgia Southern .213 to .152. In the second game, Charleston hit a match high .600 and defeated the Eagles 30-13. In game three, the Cougars out hit the Eagles .424 to .167 winning 30-20. The Cougars hit .382 in the match compared to Georgia Southern's .101.
Georgia Southern was led in the match by junior Jennifer Charles who recorded 10 kills on 17 attempts to hit .412. Freshman Mae Chabra led the team with 14 assists with senior Natalia Galantini recording 13. Senior Iulia Porumbescu, junior Staci Anderson, and sophomore Bailey Coleman each led the Eagles with seven digs. Senior Cristie Mitchell and junior Jennifer Schenk each led the Eagles with two blocks and sophomore Gorana Bacic and freshman Christy Dowd each recorded three kills.
Charleston was led by Tiffany Blum who finished the match with 14 kills and a match high nine blocks. Rebecca Wieters, who recorded 13 kills, finished with a match high .591 hitting percentage. Amanda Timmers totaled 12 kills and Marie Dobrenz finished with a match high 14 digs.
Georgia Southern will host The Citadel Saturday Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse. College of Charleston will travel to Conway, S.C. Tuesday, Oct. 18 to play Coastal Carolina at 7p.m.
Chattanooga 3, Elon 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lady Mocs won their second straight Southern Conference match with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-20) victory over Elon Friday evening.
The win moves Chattanooga to 10-9 overall and 5-2 in the Southern Conference while Elon falls to 4-15 overall and 2-5 against conference opponents.
Lindsey Galloway led the offense for the Lady Mocs with 12 kills, while Leslee Ball added nine kills of her own en route to a .467 hitting percentage. Julianna Martinez added eight kills and hit .500 for the match.
Defensively for Chattanooga, Lara Newberry had 15 digs and Galloway added eight. Bethany Herndon had three service aces, while Newberry and Juliana Martinez tallied two apiece. Herndon also had 28 set assists.
Juliena Gigon’s 11 kills led the Phoenix. Emily Downing had 10 digs and Kate Hart had 24 set assists. Emily Lucci served up three aces for Elon.
The Lady Mocs will host UNC-Greensboro tomorrow night at Maclellan Gym. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Call 266-MOCS for ticket information.
