BOONE, NC - Western Carolina’s Lauren Atkinson scored with just one second remaining in overtime to give WCU a 1-0 victory over the Appalachian State University women’s soccer squad. The Mountaineers outshot their Southern Conference foe 21-14 but couldn’t find a way to put the ball in net as they fall to 9-4-1 and 2-3-1 in the SoCon. The Catamounts improve to 11-3-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the league.
After ending regulation knotted at 0-0, the two teams nearly went into a second overtime. However, the Catamounts’ Atkinson directed a Heather Dittmer pass into goal just moments before the first overtime period ended.
Appalachian put nine shots on goal, but, all were successfully stopped by WCU goalkeeper Alesha Row. Dana Murphy (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) led the Apps’ offense with a match-high five shots. Eight other Mountaineers recorded shots, but none of them could find a way to score.
ASU also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, including three in the second period alone.
Chattanooga 1, UNC Greensboro 0
CHATTANOOGA, TN - A header from Maya Peel was good enough to give the Lady Mocs a win over UNC Greensboro Friday afternoon at the North River Soccer Complex.
Lisa Becht placed a corner kick into the top of the box and Jennifer Duggan headed it to Peel at the net. With her back to the goalie, Peel headed the ball into the upper right corner of the goal for the game-winner. That goal would stand to give the Lady Mocs the win and tie the Spartans in the league standings at 3-2.
It was a defensive struggle throughout. Chattanooga kept control of the game outshooting the Spartans 18-13, allowing UNCG just two shots in the first half. UTC’s Bjork Gunnarsdottir had 10 shots in the game with six on goal. Both keepers managed eight saves on the day.
Greensboro’s best chance to score came at with 7:13 remaining in the game. Amy Carnell, standing two yards in front of the goal, picked up a loose ball and sent the pass toward the net. Chattanooga keeper Stacey Matthiessen dove in front of the shot and smothered the attempt to keep the Spartans scoreless.
The Lady Mocs move to 6-7 on the season and Greensboro drops to 7-5.
