Appalachian State Loses Field Hockey Player

Appalachian State University lost a member of its family early Sunday morning. Mountaineer field hockey player Julie Nagel passed away on Saturday morning from injuries sustained in a car accident on Friday. Nagel, a sophomore at Appalachian, was 19 years old.

“On behalf of the entire Appalachian family, I would like to share my deepest condolences with Julie’s family, friends, sorority sisters, teammates and coaches,” ASU athletics director Charlie Cobb said. “We appreciate the support of everyone who keeps the Nagel family and all of those who were close to Julie in their thoughts and prayers.”

Nagel was critically injured while traveling to her hometown of Gaithersburg, Md. on Friday, where she was planning to spend ASU’s fall break. She was transported to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, where she died early Saturday morning.

A member of Appalachian athletics’ academic honor roll, Nagel majored in elementary education as a freshman before switching to accounting this fall.

She appeared in eight matches for the Mountaineers this season, making two starts. She earned all-state recognition in 2003 at Wooten High School in Gaithersburg, Md., where she captained both the field hockey and lacrosse squads.

She was a fall 2005 pledge of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 12 at 1:00 pm at River Road Unitarian Church in Bethesda, Maryland. Directions and information can be found at http://www.rruc.org/

Following the service, a reception will be held at the church.
