Virginia Tech 1, Elon 0

ELON, N.C. - Earlier in the day the Virginia Tech men’s soccer team earned its first top-25 ranking since November of 2003 and then the Hokies successfully defended the ranking by knocking off the Elon Phoenix by a 1-0 margin at Rudd Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Hokies improved to 6-3-3 on the season while Elon dipped below .500 for the first time this year at 5-6-2.

On a rain-soaked field, the teams played a scoreless first half and then waited more than another 35 minutes before the first and only goal of the contest was scored. At 80:35 Scott Dillie found the back of the net after collecting an Alexander Baden pass in the box. The goal was the first of the season for Dillie.

Elon had two shots in the last four seconds of regulation that were denied by the Hokie defense that would have evened the game. The Phoenix also had an excellent scoring opportunity in the first half when Brett Paschall went one-on-one with the Hokie keeper but found his shot blocked.

In net, Taylor Saxe recorded six saves for the Phoenix. Chase Harrison grabbed three saves for Virginia Tech.

The Hokies held a 4-2 margin in corner kicks and an 11-9 edge in total shots (7-4 on goal). Elon was whistled for 13 fouls to 18 for Virginia Tech and the Hokies were flagged for offside nine times.
