Charleston Southern 5, The Citadel 1
CHARLESTON, SC - Senior forward Miriam Crawford scored a goal late in the second half for The Citadel, but the Bulldogs could not put together a rally as Charleston Southern defeated The Citadel 5-1 Tuesday afternoon at Summerall Field. Two Buccaneers recorded a goal and an assist to give Charleston Southern a hard-earned win against a tough Bulldog defense.
Charleston Southern (5-7-0) found the back of the net in the 20th minute as forward Kelly Pesterfield scored unassisted. Freshman Katy Lange netted a goal ten minutes later with help from freshman Emma Mattson, her second assist on the year. In the 38th minute, Mattson drove past a Bulldog defender and chipped one in the back of the net for a 3-0 Buccaneer lead. Freshman Lindsey Trexler booted a goal from 15 yards out just before the end of the first period to put Charleston Southern up 4-0.
The Citadel (2-11-0) defense held the Buccaneers to only one goal in the second half. After a solid pass by Trexler, Buccaneer sophomore Briana Murphy found the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season, the most of any striker on the Charleston Southern squad.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the 81st minute as senior forward Miriam Crawford pulled Buccaneer keeper Miki Wilson out of the goal and hit the back of the net to prevent the shutout. Crawford, along with senior Megan McAuliffe, now lead The Citadel attack with two goals apiece on the season.
Bulldog keeper Angie Ellenwood got the start and recorded three saves. Sophomore Brit Bunnell got the call in the second period and made eight stops of her own. Wilson tallied five saves for the Buccaneers in 90 minutes of play.
