SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today announced its football Players of the Week for the week of October 10. Appalachian State’s Richie Williams was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week while Furman’s William Freeman earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Georgia Southern’s Dedrick Bynam was named the Freshman of the Week.

 

The 6-3, 190-lb. quarterback from Camden, SC, led the Mountaineers in ASU’s 34-31 loss to No. 6-ranked Furman on Saturday. Williams was 23-of-31 for 272 yards passing and picked up 124 on the ground with two touchdowns, giving him 6,059 career yards of passing and 1,078 career rushing yards. His 7,137 career yards of total offense broke the ASU record of 7,129 yards, set by Steve Brown from 1977-80. Williams became the first player in Southern Conference history to accumulate at least 6,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a career. He also became just the seventh player in league annals to top the 7,000-yard career mark.

 

Other top offensive performances from October 8 include Chattanooga’s Lironnie Davis (15 carries, 98 yards, 2 TDs), Furman’s Ingle Martin (15-of-26, 252 yards, 2 TDs), Georgia Southern’s Jayson Foster (149 yards, 4 TDs) and Wofford’s Corey Dunn (111 yards, 12 carries).

 

Freeman, a 6-3, 240-lb. senior from Swansea, SC, led the Paladins to a 34-31 win over Appalachian State. The

linebacker blocked a potential game-tying 41-yard field goal attempt as time expired to preserve the win for Furman. Freeman notched a game-high 11 tackles, including two tackles-for-loss for 15 yards. He anchored the defense that limited Appalachian State to only three third-down conversions in 11 attempts.

 

Other top defensive performances include Appalachian State’s Marques Murrell (8 tackles, 2 TFL), Chattanooga’s Lonnie McCowan (9 tackles), The Citadel’s Avery Dingle (9 tackles, 1 INT), Elon’s Chad Nkang (15 tackles, safety), Georgia Southern’s John Mohring (8 tackles, 1 TFL) and Wofford’s Katon Bethay (6 tackles, 2.5 TFL, sack).

A 6-0, 198-lb. strong safety from Columbus, GA, Bynam picked up three unassisted tackles for the Eagles as part of a defense that held Western Carolina to 70 yards rushing. He also had a sack for a nine-yard loss.
