SoCon Women's Soccer Capsules for October 9

Appalachian State 1, College of Charleston 1, 2OT

BOONE, NC ? Appalachian State University women’s soccer battled the College of Charleston through two overtimes, but 110 minutes wasn’t enough to decide on a victor as the teams played to a 1-1 tie. Both squads had chances to grab the win, but couldn’t capitalize on the few opportunities the tight match allowed.

The tie moves the Mountaineers to 9-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Southern Conference play. CofC remains unbeaten in the SoCon at 2-0-2 and 3-5-2 overall.

The Cougars nearly ended the match four minutes into the first overtime as Colleen Hoban’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into the box where Katie Brown kicked the open-net shot high. Appalachian had its opportunity two minutes later, however, CofC netminder Erin Smith successfully stopped Jaclyn Hoffman’s (Boca Raton, Fla,/Olympic Heights) shot.

Appalachian had its best chance for the win two minutes into the second overtime as Whitney Southard (Brentwood Tennessee/Christ Presbyterian) broke through the defense on a breakaway. Southard’s shot, aimed at the upper near corner, was tipped by the keeper to deny what appeared to be a certain scoring opportunity. Hoffman had two more shots, both wide left, in the period as the Apps outshot CofC, 3-1, in the second overtime.

The Cougars got their first goal of the afternoon in the 19th minute as Teryn Schuetz’s first shot was stopped by Megan Amorosi (Norfolk, Va./Maury). Amorosi could not corral the deflection and Carolyn Morris, waiting nearby, booted the deflection in for her second goal of the season.

CofC held the 1-0 lead for nearly 53 minutes before Dana Murphy (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) dribbled around a defender at the top of the box and booted a shot above the extended arm of the keeper for her fifth goal of the season.

With three minutes remaining in regulation, CofC’s Kristin Rhyne had what appeared to be an uncontested shot from 10 yards out on the nearside. However, after she struck the ball, ASU defender Suzanne Fossum (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Jacksonville Univ.) made a great play, as she came from seven yards away to throw her right foot in front of the ball to successfully deflect the shot. The Cougars tested the ASU defense, firing off two more shots, both of which were successfully defended, before time expired in regulation.

Appalachian held a slim 26-21 lead in shots and a 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Cougars had plenty of opportunities off corner kicks, as they were awarded seven to ASU’s three. Smith made seven saves in net for CofC, while Amorosi stopped three shots.

Chattanooga 2, Georgia Southern 0

STATESBORO, GA - Chattanooga’s Nikki Brannen and Diana Jallo each scored a goal to lead the Lady Mocs to a 2-0 victory over Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference women’s soccer action at Eagle Field.

Brannen’s tally came at the 27:35 mark as she headed a cross from Jennifer Wilson at the GSU goalkeeper, but the shot bounced right off the netminder’s hands into the net.

UTC outshot the Eagles 11-4 in the first half but the shots on net were even at 3-3. The Lady Mocs held a 21-8 shot advantage for the match.

Brannen’s goal held up until 1:17 remaining in the match when Jallo iced the win with a blast into the upper left corner of the net. Jallo’s goal came courtesy of Ida Marie Froseth, whose cross hit Jallo perfectly at the top of the box.

Emily Cornett went the distance in net for Chattanooga, picking up her first shutout of the season while making five saves. Megan Macdonald (Lilburn, Ga.) and Laura-Ashley Harris (Jonesboro, Ga.) each allowed one goal with two saves for the Eagles.

Davidson 5, The Citadel 0

CHARLESTON, SC - Davidson forward Kara Koehrn recorded a hat trick to lead the Wildcats past The Citadel 5-0 in Southern Conference women's soccer action at Summerall Field Sunday afternoon. Bulldog forward Lauren Merchant led The Citadel attack with three shots, including two shots on goal.

The Citadel (2-10-0, 0-5-0 SoCon) defense held the top team in the SoCon to five goals, showing progress after last year's 12-0 loss.

"I'm really proud of how we played today," said head coach Chris Lenzo. "We showed tremendous improvement over last year's result against a strong Davidson side."

Davidson (7-4-1, 4-0-0 SoCon) struck in the first four minutes of play as Koehrn drove past a Bulldog defender and beat Citadel keeper Brit Bunnell to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage. Koehrn then scored a header after a pass off the foot of Amanda Traver. Forward Kristen Koehrn found the back of the net in the 35th minute from 10 yards out to put Davidson up 3-0 at halftime.

The Citadel defense held the Davidson attack to two goals in the second period. Kara Koehrn tallied her 10th goal of the season after a solid pass from Kristen Koehrn, her third assist of the year. Junior midfielder Cameron Hardesty rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats with her first goal of 2005 to make the final 5-0.

"We're learning what it takes to play with intensity for 90 minutes," added Lenzo.

Bunnell recorded five saves on the day for the Bulldogs as senior bulldog keeper Angie Ellenwood made four stops of her own in the second half.
