Davidson 3, Coastal Carolina 1

DAVIDSON, NC ? Davidson netted a pair of second half goals and ended a two-game losing skid with a 3-1 victory over Coastal Carolina in men’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 7-5-1 overall, while the Chanticleers fall to 3-7-1 on the season.

“The guys needed a boost after two tough losses on the road earlier this week,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “They bounced back with a tough fought victory, which is just what the doctor ordered.”

The Wildcats' Cass Baltz put the first score on the board in the 39th minute with his third score of the 2005 campaign. Jeff Davis played a ball wide to John Latting, who found Baltz cutting to the goal for the point blank range chip.

Coastal Carolina had a great opportunity to equalize less than three minutes into the second period when Joseph Kabwe's one-on-one attempt sailed just high of the target.

The Chanticleers tied the game at a goal apiece in the 67th minute when Patrick Robertson headed home a corner from Lachlan Cahill.

Following Robertson's second goal of the season, he was issued a red card for taking down Davidson's goalkeeper Ben Ashton on an attempted corner kick. The 68th minute ejection forced Coastal Carolina to play a man down the remainder of the contest.

Davidson's Aaron West provided the eventual game-winner with just over 16 minutes left in regulation when he rebounded a shot that deflected off the Chanticleers' keeper. Marco Antunez set up West's first goal of the season when his one-on-one blast was blocked by Aaron Weant right to the foot of West.

Mac Wilkie added an insurance goal for Davidson just over eight minutes later to give the ?Cats a 3-1 advantage. Wilkie’s first strike of the season came when Baltz crossed a Kerby Teller header attempt that just grazed the right post.

“Today’s game was a total team effort. I thought guys like Mac Wilkie and Jon Bassett provided us with the energy and play we need to come out with the win,” said Coach Spear.

The Wildcats finished with a slim 13-11 advantage in shots forcing Weant to make four saves. Ashton turned away one shot for Davidson.

West was issued his second yellow card with just under two minutes remaining for a delay of game. The card resulted in West being ejected from the match.

Davidson continues its four-game home stand in a 7 p.m. kickoff with in-state rival UNC Asheville Oct. 12. Coastal Carolina will play at High Point on Wednesday.

“After some tough road games its great to be back at Alumni Stadium and 1992 Team Field,” commented Spear.
