Southern Conference Volleyball Capsules for Oct. 1

Appalachian State 3, UNC Greensboro 0

BOONE, N.C

. ? Junior Amy Lewis hit .727 (nine kills, one error, 11 total attacks) and three Mountaineers recorded double-digit kills, as the Appalachian State University volleyball team defeated UNC Greensboro, 3-0 (30-21, 30-26, 30-17), in Southern Conference play Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Holmes Center.

With the win the Mountaineers move to 10-6 on the season and 3-1 in the SoCon, while the Spartans drop to 2-12 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Appalachian has now won two-straight conference matches and six-straight games, after sweeping Elon Friday night.

Appalachian hit .281 on the night including 52 kills, while holding UNC Greensboro to a .049 hitting percentage and 27 kills.

Lewis (Chesnee, S.C.) started all three games, adding one solo block and a block assist to her nine kills.

Seniors Kali Rumberger (Spokane, Wash.) and Stefanie Panzer (Mt. Gilead, N.C.) and sophomore Dianna Thomas (Mobile, Ala.) tallied double-digit kills, recording 13, 12 and 10, respectively. Rumberger led the team with 14 digs, while Panzer compiled a match-high nine total blocks.

Sophomore Lorelle Rau (Oakland Park, Fla.) continued her solid season for the Mountaineers, recording 46 assists, eight digs and three total blocks.

Hilary Overby paced the Spartans with eight kills and five digs. Adrian Hicks recorded 23 set assists and five digs for UNCG.

The Mountaineers and Spartans opened the match, exchanging points in game one. With the score tied at 11, Appalachian went on an 11-3 run to take a 22-14 lead behind eight ASU kills. The Apps went on to take game one, 30-21.

Game two got off to a similar start, with the two teams exchanging points to open play. With the score tied at 10, ASU outscored UNCG, 10-4, to take a 20-14 lead. The Spartans fought back, pulling within two at 26-28, but the Mountaineers went on to win game two, 30-26, and take a 2-0 match-lead.

After tying the third game at two, Appalachian jumped out to a 12-5 lead. The Mountaineers didn’t look back, going to take a 30-17 game-three win and the match, 3-0.

The Mountaineers stay at home, as they host College of Charleston and The Citadel Oct. 7 and 8 in SoCon play. Both matches begin at 7 p.m., at the Holmes Center and can be followed live on the web at www.GoASU.com.

 

Georgia Southern 3, Furman 0

STATESBORO, Ga. ? Head Coach Kerry Messersmith was honored before the match with her 100th win. The victory was over Louisiana-Monroe on September 9 as the Eagles walked away 3-1. The Georgia Southern volleyball team improved their Southern Conference record to 3-0 after beating Furman 30-18 in game one, 30-16 in game two, and 30-20 in game three.

Game One: Georgia Southern (10-5, 3-0 SoCon), started off strong against the Paladins (5-8, 1-2 SoCon) as they totaled 29 attacks with 15 kills and only 2 errors. Iulia Porumbescu dominated the court as she maintained a .571 attack percentage with 4 kills. Natalia Galantini walked away with 9 assists as freshmen setter Mae Chabra also put up 4. The Eagles lead Furman throughout the entire game and at match point, Christie Mitchell laid down a kill to win the game 30-18.

Game Two: The Eagles started the second game with a 4-0 lead thanks to the serves of Natalia Galantini. Bailey Coleman stepped up and extended the Eagle lead 8-3. Coleman served 3 of the 6 Georgia Southern aces of the game. Christie Mitchell came out big with 9 attacks and 5 total kills. Iulia Porumbescu also put up 13 attacks with 6 kills. Georgia Southern also was big on defense as Gorana Bacic put up 2 blocks along with Porumbescu.

Game Three: After a short break in between games, Furman came out and took their only lead of the match 3-1 until Jennifer Charles stepped up to serve and the Paladins saw 4 kills from the Eagles along with 3 attack against themselves. Bailey Coleman put up 10 digs and 18 attacks for a double-double this game. Iulia Porumbescu also had a double-double with 24 attacks and 11 digs. Georgia Southern put up 33 total attacks and 18 kills against Furman in the final game. The Eagles pulled out a 30-20 game over Furman to win the match 3-0.

Georgia Southern will face Wofford on Sunday, October 2 at 2 pm in Hanner Fieldhouse.

College of Charleston 3, Western Carolina 0

Amanda Timmers had 17 kills while Marie Dobrenz added 24 digs leading the College of Charleston to a 3-0 (30-9, 30-13, 30-21) sweep of Western Carolina in Southern Conference volleyball action at John Kresse Arena on Saturday.

With the win, Charleston's fifth in a row, the Cougars improved to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in league play. WCU fell to 3-13 and 2-3.

Kaycie Carr dished out 42 assists, while Tiffany Blum and Rebecca Wieters added 17 and 11 kills each, respectively.

The Cougars, who won their 23rd straight SoCon match, stretched their overall home court winning streak to 13 matches and also claimed their 39th consecutive home win in Southern Conference play.

The Catamounts were paced by Ellie Talbot's seven kills and 17 assists from Meghan Boyle. Tablot added a team-high 13 digs.

Both schools play SoCon matches on Sunday. The Cougars play host to Chattanooga at 1:00. Western Carolina is at The Citadel at 2:00.

Chattanooga 3, The Citadel 1

Charleston, SC - Freshman outside hitter Rachel Sanders led The Citadel with 15 kills and freshman setter Emily Hill tallied 44 assists but Chattanooga came away with the win, 3-1 (28-30, 30-20, 30-16, 30-21), Saturday afternoon in Southern Conference volleyball action in McAlister Field House.

Senior outside hitter Stefanie Farris was second offensively for the Bulldogs with 13 kills while senior middle blocker Marina Daniel and freshmen middle blockers Amy Brooks and Alexandra Morrell added 10 kills each. Hill also led the Cadets with 15 digs.

For the Mocs, senior right side hitter Lindsey Galloway had 15 kills and sophomore Bethany Herndon and freshman Michaela Huff split time at setter to add 27 and 24 assists respectively. Galloway was followed by senior right side hitter Kelly Ramsay with 13 kills and sophomore middle blocker Leslie Ball with 12 kills. Ball led both teams with eight block assists.

Chattanooga (8-8, 3-1 SoCon) will stay in town to face the College of Charleston tomorrow, while The Citadel (2-14, 0-6 SoCon) will host Western Carolina on Sunday at 2:00 pm in McAlister Field House.
