Appalachian State 2, SC State 0

ORANGEBURG, SC - Appalachian State women's soccer picked up its eighth win of the season with a 2-0 non-conference win at South Carolina State Friday, September, 30.

Appalachian netted both of its goals in the first half with freshman Beth Miller (Belmont, N.C./South Point) scoring first in the eighth minute off a rebound from her own shot. The goal is the first of Miller's career.

Classmate Casey Cleary (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) knocked in her eighth goal of the season in the 50th minute to give the Mountaineers the 2-0 win.

Appalachian outshot the Bulldogs 21-4 with Cleary tallying eight of those shots. ASU also held a 7-0 advantage in corners. Appalachian used the non-conference atmosphere to play nearly its entire roster as 21 players saw action in the match.

Freshman netminder Megan Amorosi (Norfolk, Va./Maury) had a quiet night in net, facing just one shot as the defense in front of her thwarted nearly all SCSU offensive charges.

 

 

Chattanooga 4, The Citadel 0

CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Chattanooga women’s soccer team snapped a two-game losing skid Friday afternoon and closed out a five-game homestand, defeating The Citadel 4-0 at the North River Soccer Complex.

“We’re 1-1 in the Southern Conference now,” UTC Head Coach J.D. Kyzer said. “Hopefully this will open the door to more success for us.”

The Lady Mocs’ first two goals came off free kicks, hit directly into the net over the outstretched hands of Bulldog keeper Britni Bunnell. Senior midfielder Elfa Erlingsdottir took the first shot from the right side about 20 yards out at the 20:49 mark to put the Lady Mocs on the board. In the 43rd minute senior defender Lisa Becht scored her first collegiate goal on a free kick from the left side from 30 yards away.

Chattanooga (4-6, 1-1) carried a 2-0 lead into the half with a 20-1 shot margin over The Citadel. In the second half, UTC added 15 more shots to the total to the Bulldogs one and scored another pair to win 4-0.

Erlingsdottir scored again at the 50:58 mark on a corner kick from Becht. Nearly six minutes later freshman Bjork Gunnarsdottir sent a pass from the right side into the center of the box for sophomore Jennifer Wilson’s first goal of the season.

The Citadel falls to 2-7 on the season and 0-2 against the league.
