Gardner-Webb 2, Wofford 0

The Wofford men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Gardner-Webb in its home opener tonight at Snyder Field.

With the Bulldogs controlling much of the play throughout the contest, Wofford was able to only manage four shots, including a pair by senior midfielder Tim Mittmann (Moore, S.C.). Mittmann provided the Terriers with their best chance of the game as he took a shot off a reset which skimmed the post and went wide with 17 minutes remaining. Junior R.P. Benik (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) also had a solid scoring opportunity as his shot sailed high over the Gardner-Webb net.

After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs' Brian Wentzel collected a loose ball in the box from an initial shot from Darnell Carroll for the game's first tally at 60:11. Gardner-Webb would add its second score at the 66:08 mark when Andy Donaldson thread the ball through the Wofford defense to a streaking Chapman Walsh at the top of the 18-yard box.

Among the Terriers earning their first collegiate playing time were James Fogartie (Raleigh, N.C.) and Kyle Walker (Inman, S.C.) who both entered the match in the second half. Fellow freshman Joey Taylor (Spring, Texas) made his second straight start in goal, notching six saves on the evening.

"I thought our guys gave an honest days work," said head coach Matt Kern. "We battled hard but struggled getting it into the midfield and final third. We tried to be more direct, playing some balls through our goalkeeper, but Gardner-Webb won most of the headers which enabled them to retain possession."

With the loss, Wofford drops to 0-2 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 1-1.

The Terriers will next travel to Nashville, Tenn., for a pair of contests this weekend. First on the slate is a 6:30 p.m. match at Belmont Friday before tangling with Lipscomb Sunday at 1 p.m.
