Elon def. Norfolk St. 3-0

ELON, N.C. - The Phoenix volleyball team swept the Spartans of Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon, 30-10, 30-7 and 30-15. With the win, Elon improves to 7-6 on the season while Norfolk State falls to 0-7.

In game one, Elon had scoring runs of six, five and eight points along with seven blocks on the way to a 30-10 victory. Up 5-1 in game two, Elon went on an 8-0 scoring run behind Lindsay Reinhardt's serve and Norfolk State errors to stretch the lead to 12 at 13-1. After another Elon run of six points, the Phoenix led by 18, 23-5 and finished the game at 30-7. In game three, the score was tied at 6-6 before Elon outscored the Spartans 13-2 to take an 11-point lead, 19-8. Game three saw seven service aces by the Phoenix, including two aces by Brooke Pickard to end the game, 30-15.

All 14 players saw action for Elon with seven of them recording at least four kills for the Phoenix. Emily Hayes led the way with nine kills and only one error while Juliena Gigon and Emily Lucci each posted five kills. Natalie Moore recorded 24 assists for Elon and Kate Hart added nine. Six players posted at least three digs for Elon. M.K. Spear led defense with eight digs and Moore and Hart each added four. The Phoenix tallied 18 service aces with Britany Westphal leading the way with five aces and Hayes adding four. The Phoenix notched 10 total blocks to the Spartans two blocks.

Racheal Weatherspoon led the Spartan offense with four kills while Marian Johnson added three. Afryea Allen posted nine assists for Norfolk State while Angel Uy recorded nine digs.

Elon returns to action on Tuesday night in a 7:00 p.m. game at Charlotte. The Spartans travel to Bethune-Cookman for a 1:00 p.m. match-up on Friday, October 1.
