Furman 2, Princeton 1

Dominic Cianciarulo scored the game-winning goal when he directed a shot into the upper-right corner from 25 yards out at the 74:17 mark to lead the Furman men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Princeton in an opening-round match of the Wofford/adidas Invitational this afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

Cianciarulo's unassisted goal came just 3:44 after Princeton (3-2-1) tied the game at 1-1 when Jame Wunsch scored off a free kick into the box. The assist was by Ben Young.

The Tigers had a chance to tie the match and force overtime with 12 seconds remaining. Wunsch had an open half of the net from six yards out but chipped the ball over the goal.

After a scoreless first half, the Paladins (2-3-1) took a 1-0 lead on a Richard Jata goal, assisted by Jordan Mann and Josh Villalobos, at 57:54. Villalobos fed Mann with a cross who found Jata for the tally from six-yards out.

Furman goalkeeper Alex Maslow recorded four saves. Erik White had three saves in net for Princeton. The Tigers outshot the Paladins by a 16-12 margin.

Both teams continue play Sunday at the Wofford/adidas Invitational. Princeton will face the host Terriers at noon. Furman plays Liberty at 2:30 p.m.

Liberty 1, Wofford 0

A second half goal by Darryl Roberts was enough to give Liberty a 1-0 victory over Wofford tonight at Snyder Field. The two teams were meeting in the second match of the day as part of the inaugural Wofford/adidas Invitational.

Roberts scored the game's only tally at the 69:33 mark after receiving a pass from Bobby Dabbs. Roberts, a member of the Trinidad and Tobago National Team, streaked past the Terrier defense and fired the shot past freshman goalkeeper Joey Taylor (Spring, Texas) from 10 yards out.

The first half saw both teams sharing possession with Liberty holding a slight 9-8 edge in shots. After the break, the Flames held most of the ball possession and took a 14-3 margin in shots. For the game, Liberty outshot Wofford, 23-11, despite only five being on goal.

Junior Russ Sandifer (Columbia, S.C.) tallied a pair of saves playing the first half in goal before giving way to Taylor, who recorded one save. Sophomore defender Brandon Lowery (Gastonia, N.C.) also cleared one ball off the backline for the Terriers.

Liberty was led by six players with more than one shot, including a team-high seven by Roberts. Kyle Cupid notched four coming off the bench. In goal, K.J. Sabotchick registered five stops in the shutout.

Wofford drops to 2-6 on the season with the loss while the Flames improve to 4-3-1.

Both teams will be back in action Sunday to conclude the Wofford/adidas Invitational. The Terriers will open the second day at Noon with a contest against Ivy League foe Princeton. Following its finish, the tournament will wrap up with Liberty taking on Furman at 2:30 p.m.

Elon 2, St Francis 1

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Elon picked up its second victory of the season on Friday afternoon by downing St. Francis (Pa.) 2-1 in the opening round of the JMU Men's Soccer Tournament.
Brett Paschall scored two unassisted goals in the second half to rally the Phoenix (2-3-3) to the victory over the Red Flash (1-4-0).

St. Francis led 1-0 at halftime after a goal by sophomore Scott Thompson in the 39th minute. Thompson took a pass from freshman Jeremy Tice and sent a sharply angled shot into the far corner of the goal.

Paschall scored his goals on nearly identical plays. On each of his scores an Elon player sent a ball into the box, and the ball rebounded off a St. Francis defender to Paschall. He scored on a 18-yard shot in the 55th minute and from 15 yards out in the 76th minute.

The JMU Tournament continues Sunday when Elon meets Longwood at 1:00 p.m., followed by JMU vs. St. Francis at 3:30 p.m.
