Davidson Falls to San Fransisco 3-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Davidson men's soccer team was unable to overcome a second-half scoring surge by the San Francisco Dons, falling 3-1 in the first game of the Santa Clara/adidas Classic on Thursday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-2 this season while USF improves to 4-1 overall.

"This was a good early season test for us," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "Traveling across the country and playing against an unfamiliar system and seeing different styles is good for us to do. Unfortunately, it was a test we didn't pass well."

The Wildcats outshot the Dons 9-6 in the contest but had trouble finding the back of the net. Two solid chances by junior forward Matt Allen in the first half proved fruitless as the halftime scoreboard read 0-0.

"We had plenty of scoring opportunities in the first half and early in the second half to put the game out of reach," Spear commented.

After the scoreless first half, the Wildcats opened the final period pounding at the goal. Consecutive close calls by junior defender Will Carroll and sophomore forward Mac Wilkie gave way to Davidson's lone goal just moments later.

Junior defender Nahum Navas took the ball up the right side and across midfield before passing forward to sophomore midfielder Marco Antunez. Antunez sent a long pass to the far post in perfect position for sophomore Robbie Reynolds to head in the go-ahead goal at the 33:47 mark.

Davidson held the lead just briefly, though, as San Francisco knotted the score at one with just under 28 minutes remaining in regulation. Defender Kevin Long sent a long ball deep into Davidson's territory. Forward Aaron Chandler picked up the pass in the right side of the box and drilled the ball into the opposite corner of the net for the equalizer.

The goal caused a definite momentum shift USF's way. The Dons possessed the ball in their offensive third of the field, managing several scoring chances off set pieces. At the 62:17 mark, San Francisco capitalized on a throw in from the right side. A long flip throw by forward Jordan Keyes across the goal mouth found Long open at the far post for what was ultimately the game-winning goal.

San Francisco put the game away with a final goal off a direct kick less than two minutes before time expired. Chandler got his second score of the evening off assists from Keyes and Matt Languis.

Davidson looks forward to taking on host and defending NCAA semifinalist Santa Clara on Saturday evening. Game time is set for 10:30 (EDT). USF will return to Santa Clara to battle San Jose State in the early contest on Saturday

ETSU women's soccer falls to Radford in last minute tally, 1-0
RADFORD, Va. (Sept. 16, 2004) - Senior Highlander Nikki Porter scored in the 83rd minute to lift Radford (4-3) to a 1-0 victory over East Tennessee State (3-3) Thursday evening at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

After several scoring opportunities in the second half, junior Jonita Hooker found Porter with a through ball from the center of the midfield. She then beat Buc keeper Christine Parks (Annapolis, Md.) for the winning tally. The assist by Hooker was her second of the season and extended her season scoring streak to six games.

Despite outshooting the Buccaneers 11-3 and controlling most of the play, Radford had a scare late in the match. In the 85th minute, ETSU seemed to score the tying goal after a free kick, but a Buccaneer player was called offside, nullifying the goal.

Parks finished with four saves for ETSU, while Tara Oleartchick earned her first collegiate shut out for Radford, making one save.

The Buccaneers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 26 when they open Southern Conference action on the road in Charleston, S.C. when they will face The Citadel at 1 p.m.
