Lady Paladins Fall To South Carolina In Home Opener 3-1
Furman Travels To Clemson Friday Night.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Jessi Swaim scored a goal and added an assist to lead South Carolina to a 3-1 victory over the Furman Lady Paladins in front of a crowd of 1,112 Tuesday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.

Swaim opened the scoring for the Gamecocks at the 15:43 mark. Lexi Randazzo sent a low cross through the box that Swaim redirected past keeper Andie Hinshaw to give South Carolina a 1-0 lead.

After the hlaftime break, Furman evened the match at a goal a piece on a driving shot from 13 yards out by freshman Emily Krankowski. Katie Tucker played a cross from the left wing that Nicky Darling on the far post. Darling centered the ball to set up Krankowski to tie the match at 1-1 at 52:15.

Exactly seven minutes later South Carolina regained the lead. Amanda Thurber collected a rebound and fired a shot by Hinshaw for her first tally of the season in the 60th minute. The Gamecocks added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when a USC cross was deflected in by a Furman defender for an own goal.

"This was a tough result for our team to swallow," said Lady Paladin head coach Brian Lee. " W have a big match at Clemson on Friday night and have to have ourselves prepared to play."

The Gamecocks, 2-1-0 on the season, outshot Furman 14-6 on the night while corner kicks were even at four each. Lindsay Thorstenson tallied two saves to pick up the win in goal. Furman's Hinshaw recorded two saves in a losing effort.

Furman, 0-2-0, returns to action Friday night when it travels to face nationally-ranked Clemson at Historic Riggs Field at 7:30 p.m.


WCU Soccer Falls 2-0 to Coastal Carolina
Cats Return to Action Friday, Sept. 3 versus UNC Asheville

Conway, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina-Western Carolina women's soccer game had problems with weather but after a 90-minute lightning delay the Chanticleers defeated the Catamounts 2-0 Tuesday evening at the CCU Soccer Field.

In the first half, Coastal outshot the Catamounts 11-7, but WCU goalkeeper Alesha Row held the Lady Chants in check until 35:08 of the first, when Emily McColl found Erin Blevins, who drove the ball in the left corner past Row. Stoll made two stops in the first half to keep the Lady Chants 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Catamounts outshot CCU 9-7, but it was Coastal who capitalized on the scoring opportunity. Simone Borucinski gave a lob that Jill Karelitz collected and put past the oncoming Catamount goalie, providing the final 2-0 margin.

Stoll came up huge in the second half, stopping six shots for her career-high eight saves. Row had four saves for Western.

Coastal outshot Western 18-16 and had the advantage in corner kicks 6-2. Junior Bobbie Parsons had a team-high six shots, while Heather Dittmer and Megan Chambers had four shots for WCU, with Dittmer putting all four shots on goal.

The Catamounts return to action Friday, Sept. 3 to face UNC Asheville in Cullowhee. Match time is set to begin at 4:00 pm at Schrader Field.
