Baseball 8/27/2004 6:08:00 PM Southern Conference Furman's Mastny Named to Sally League All-Star Team GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Former Furman All-America pitcher Tom Mastny has been named to the 2004 South Atlantic League All-Star Team, it has been announced. A member of the Charleston (W.Va.) Alley Cats, the single-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, the righthander joined Rome Braves lefthander Chuck James as the two pitchers named to the annual 13-member squad. Mastny currently sports an 8-3 record and 2.27 earned run average, the third best mark in the SAL. He has worked 139 innings this year and surrendered 118 hits and 38 walks while striking out 132. His Charleston Alley Cats team won the SAL's first half Northern Division crown and are currently in second place with a 34-25 record, five games behind the Hickory Crawdads. Earlier this year Mastny was selected to play in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. Mastny was named 2003 Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year and became the Paladins' first All-American after going 11-2 with an NCAA best 1.09 ERA while helping Furman to a school season record 32 wins, including victories over North Carolina State, South Carolina, and a pair of triumphs over Clemson. Following graduation, the Zionsville, Ind., native became the second highest draft selection in Furman history when he was picked in the 11th round by the Blue Jays.
