Men's Basketball 7/6/2004 9:47:00 AM Southern Conference Charleston Hires Ryan To Hoops Staff Charleston, S.C. -- Sean Ryan, an assistant coach for three seasons at Saint Anselm College, has been named assistant men's basketball coach at College of Charleston, head coach Tom Herrion announced on Tuesday. Ryan, who is well-known on the youth circuit where he has been involved in various levels of Amateur Athletic Union basketball since 1998, replaces Mark Byington to left to take a position at the University of Virginia last month. "We are thrilled to welcome Sean to our C of C basketball family. I have known Sean for a long time and he is a great addition to our staff," said Herrion, who's led the Cougars to a 45-17 record during his first two seasons. "Sean was an outstanding player at Monmouth and St. Anslem's and he has played a major role at one of the most successful Division II programs in the country. Sean is a very bright and talented coach and his future in this business is very bright. I am confident that Sean will represent our institution in a great way." "I'm excited and honored to be a part of a program that has had the success of being considered one of the top mid-majors in the country," added Ryan. "The College of Charleston and coach Herrion are proven winners." While at Saint Anselm, an NCAA Division II school located in Manchester, N.H., Ryan was the program's primary recruiter. He was responsible for signing two first team All-Northeast Conference-10 squad members, and a pair of NE-10 All-Rookie team members. Ryan worked at HB Development in Wilmington, Mass. from 1999-2001 where he was a personal basketball trainer for high-level athletes. Ryan also worked for Prime Time Sports, Inc. as the regional sales manager from 1996 to 1999. Ryan has deep roots to the Saint Anselm program, having graduated from the school in 1996. Ryan transferred to the Hilltop from Monmouth University in Long Branch, N.J. where he played two seasons for the Division I Hawks. While at Saint Anselm, Ryan proved to be one of the premier guards in the talent-laden Northeast-10 Conference. Ryan finished his career as a 1,000 point scorer, placing 32nd on the all-time list with 1,063 and setting a record for 3-pointers made in a single game (10). Ryan tallied 421 field goals and showed himself to be a lethal 3-point shooter with 229 treys, good enough for fifth all-time. He achieved a long list of honors including first team All NE-10 and NABC All-New England second team. Ryan works daily with the players in all aspects of the game. He also coordinates film analysis. Further, Ryan is one the team's top recruiters in a program known for its ability to land star players.
