Football 7/28/2004 2:16:00 PM Southern Conference Beam Transfers To Elon ELON, N.C. -- Elon University football coach Paul Hamilton today announced that linebacker Lamar Beam (Shelby, N.C./Crest) will be joining the Phoenix football program this fall as a scholarship player. Beam - a transfer from East Tennessee State University where he was a three-year starter - appeared in 10 games last season as a junior for the Buccaneers' final football squad, collecting 23 tackles, including 11 solo stops and five tackles for a loss (-18 yards) and a sack (-7 yards). The 6-4, 245-pound Beam led ETSU with six sacks and 12 tackles for a loss in 2002. Beam was second on his squad in total tackles that year, amassing 73 stops for the Buccaneers. He earned Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in a 31-15 victory over Elon on Oct. 19, 2002. As a senior on coach Roy Kirby's Crest High School team, Beam was awarded with defensive lineman of the year and most valuable player distinction for his squad in 1999. He is the son of Larry and Deborah Beam. The Phoenix opens its 2004 season on September 4th when it hosts Towson at 2:00 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium.
