Elon Duo Earns All-State Honors

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Elon University baseball players Gary Morris (Franklin, N.C.) and Drew Davis (Salisbury, N.C.) were named to the first-ever University Division All-State team by The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) on Wednesday afternoon. Morris, a junior, earned the honor as an infielder while Davis, a sophomore, made the team as a catcher.

Morris who played second base for the Phoenix, finished his junior campaign with 88 hits, a new Elon single-season record. He led the team by posting a .379 batting average and scoring 64 runs. His seven home runs were tied for the team lead and he drove in 36 runs this year. Morris was also 21-for-27 in stolen base attempts in 2004. Morris played in 59 games, tying the Elon mark for most games played in a season. He also entered the single-season top-10 lists in at bats (3rd, 232), runs (2nd, 64) and total bases (5th, 128). Morris advanced into the top-10 in the following career categories this season: games played (10th, 167), at bats (8th, 589), hits (9th, 185), runs scored (4th, 147) and doubles (9th, 31).

Davis finished second on the squad with a .351 batting average this season. In 231 at bats, he struck out only 19 times. Davis legged out 16 doubles and three triples to go along with his six homers. He drove in 51 runs, second on the team, and was successful on 14 of 17 stolen base attempts. Davis put his name on the single-season top-10 lists in games played (T1st, 59), at bats (4th, 231), hits (T4th, 81), doubles (T9th, 16) and total bases (8th, 121) this season.

The team consists of NCAA Division I student-athletes from North Carolina colleges and universities. Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals. NCCSIA members voted on the All-State teams.

Founded in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information. NCCSIA selects all-state teams for men's and women's soccer, softball and baseball on both the College and University (Division I) levels.
