Gustin, Swearingen Named To All-State Team

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-- Elon University softball players Jenny Gustin and Jessica Swearengin were named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Softball Team as announced Monday afternoon.

Gustin, a senior first baseman from Mooresville, N.C., finished her collegiate career ranked first in eight categories at Elon and was the first player to crack over 200 career hits. She posted a .330 batting average in 2004 and knocked 61 hits, including 16 doubles and two home runs. A First Team All-Southern Conference selection, Gustin also notched 27 RBI and 19 runs scored. She tallied 426 put outs and 20 assists at first base for a .989 fielding percentage.

A junior outfielder, Swearengin batted .316 during the 2004 season with two doubles, two triples and a home run. She tallied 47 put outs and three assists from centerfield. She ranks fifth at Elon in career stolen bases (37). Swearengin, a native of Mooresville, N.C., was also named First Team All-Southern Conference in the team's first year in the league.

Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals. NCCSIA members voted for the all-state teams. Founded in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
