Davidson Competes at SoCon Championships

BOONE, N.C. -- The Davidson track and field team concluded action at the 2004 Southern Conference Championships today with a variety of athletes earning points for the Wildcats. Host Appalachian State captured both the men's and women's titles.

Freshman David Ritchie brought home Davidson's best finish of the two-day festivities as he captured third in the 400 meter hurdles. His time of :53.98 was a personal best in that event. Senior Greg Scott wound up placing in two events - the 800 and 1,500 meters. He finished fourth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 3:57.63 and seventh in the 800 meters. Freshman Douglas Noreen edged out Scott for sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.14. Noreen still gets to look forward to the U.S. Junior National Meet in June thanks to posting a qualifying time in the 800 meters (1:53.10) last month at the Charlotte Invitational.

Both men's relay teams placed in the top five Sunday afternoon. The 4x400 meter group comprised of Ritchie, seniors Andrew Pratt and Chris Rouisse, along with freshman John Bialas earned fourth with a time of 3:21.77. In the 4x100 meter relay, the same quartet crossed the finish line in :43.01, good enough for fifth. Overall, the Davidson men finished in eighth place with 26 team points.

On the women's side, senior Amanda Yeck and sophomore Allie Martin were the lone 'Cats to earn points. Yeck earned a tie for sixth in the high jump with Western Carolina's Shanna Fouts after clearing the 5'1" mark. Meanwhile, Martin placed seventh in both the 800 and 1,500 meters. Overall, the Wildcat women placed ninth with 13.5 team points.
