Clark Takes Reins of Elon's Women's Soccer Program

ELON, N.C. -- Elon University today announced the hiring of Matt Clark as the new head coach of the Phoenix women's soccer program. Clark comes to Elon after serving in the same capacity at Southern Mississippi since July of 2000, taking over for Paul Webster who resigned after nine years at the end of April.

"This is a great opportunity both professionally and for my family," said Clark of his new position at Elon. "It's an answered prayer for us. My job is now to come in and start a new tradition of excellence with this program."

In 14 seasons as a women's coach at Southern Miss, Auburn-Montgomery, Park College and Huntingdon College, Clark has tallied a 127-99-12 (.559) ledger. A 1984 graduate of Illinois State, Clark's Southern Miss teams managed three winning seasons, including a 9-7-3 mark last year.

Clark led his Park College women's squad to a 1996 National Tournament appearance at the NAIA level. While at Park College, he coached both the men's and women's teams to national rankings in the NAIA polls.

Clark collected National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional Coach of the Year honors in 1999 while at Auburn-Montgomery. He has also claimed conference Coach of the Year accolades from the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference in 1998 with Park College, the American Midwest Conference in 1997 with Park College and the Southern States Conference in 1993, 1994 and 1995 with Huntingdon College.

As a men's head coach, Clark accumulated a 64-43-5 (.594) record. As the head coach of the AUM men's team, Clark led his team to the GACC title and to a national ranking in the 1999 NAIA Poll.

During the 1988-1990 seasons, Clark coached the men's team at Trinity College to New England Small College Association regional and NCAA-III national rankings.

Professionally, Clark has played for the Memphis Americans (MISL, 1984), the Milwaukee Wave (AISA, 1985-87), the Chicago Shoccers (NPSL, 1987-88) and the Montgomery Capitals (USISL, 1993).

Clark holds a B.S. in business administration from Illinois State and an A.A. from William Rainey Harper College.

Clark is married to the former Kimberley Reeves of Lynchburg, Va. The couple has one child.
