SPARTANBURG, SC -- Head volleyball coach Corey Helle and Terrier program have annouced the upcoming 2004 schedule, highlighted by three early season tournaments and the season-opening match up against N.C. State.
"We are very excited about our schedule this coming season," said Helle. "It provides us with some quality matches, including the highlight against N.C. State. Although we only have eight home matches, each one is in conference play which will make it mean that much more. The crowds we had last season at home were great and hopefully that will translate into an even better atmosphere this year."
Wofford will open the season at the Summit Hospitality Wolfpack Classic in Raleigh, N.C., with the first match against host N.C. State (Sept. 3). Later in the same day, the Terriers will battle UNC Wilmington before concluding the tournament Sept. 4 against UNC Asheville.
The next weekend, Sept. 10-11, Wofford heads to Buies Creek, N.C., for the Campbell Classic. The first day of the tournament, Sept. 10, will pit Wofford against SoCon foe Western Carolina. A pair of matches Sept. 11 will finish the Terriers' participation in the tournament, which include a rematch against UNC Asheville and a contest against the host Camels.
A single match at Winthrop (Sept. 14) precedes the Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) Tournament in Princess Anne, Md., Sept. 17-18. Wofford will face Sacred Heart and Columbia the first day before battling Coppin State and UMES Sept. 18.
The Terriers will remain on the road and play a trio of matches in Nashville, Tenn., beginning with a contest at Lipscomb (Sept. 24). The next day, Sept. 25, they will face Troy State in a neutral-site match and then play at Belmont.
The season continues to be played away from home as the Wofford opens the Southern Conference section of its schedule with three away matches. Starting Oct. 1 at the College of Charleston, the Terriers will also play at The Citadel (Oct. 2) and at UNC Greensboro (Oct. 6).
Finally, Oct. 8, the team returns home to play in the Benjamin Johnson Arena against Georgia Southern. Two days later (Oct. 10), Davidson comes to Spartanburg.
Wofford returns to the road for a pair of matches, at Western Carolina (Oct. 12) and at Appalachian State (Oct. 17) before welcoming Chattanooga (Oct. 23) and East Tennessee State (Oct. 24) to town.
A match at High Point (Oct. 27) concludes the non-conference portion of the schedule while the Terriers will also play at Furman Oct. 29.
The next four straight matches conclude the home slate beginning Oct. 31 against Elon. Wofford will also face the College of Charleston (Nov. 5), The Citadel (Nov. 6) and Furman (Nov. 9). The rematch against the Paladins will be Senior Day.
A pair of matches on the road, at Georgia Southern (Nov. 12) and at Davidson (Nov. 14) conclude the regular season.
The Southern Conference Championship will be held Nov. 19-21 at Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C.
