Eagles Compete In Irwin Belk Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C.- Georgia Southern set five new personal records, a school record, and won six events Saturday at the Irwin Belk Invitational on the campus of Davidson College.

The Eagle's Marlo Mincey, Margo Mincey, Julie Prather and Brittney Chase each set new personal records on the day. Marlo Mincey set new personal marks in the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter dash, with times of 14.46 and 55.09, respectively. Her time of 55.09 in the 400 meter dash was good enough for the win, and it also set a new Georgia Southern record. Chase's time of 14.45 in the 100 meter hurdles marks her top finish, while Prather's time of 2:19.44 in the 800 meter run set a new best, while finishing second. Margo Mincey set her new record in the 200 meter dash, with a final time of 24.93, good enough for fifth place.

Georgia Southern dominated the throw events, winning all four events. In the shot put, Jamila Minnifield's throw of 12.79 meters gave her first, while teammates Amber Tiggs and Nikki Slocumb rounded out the top three. Shaletha Lightfoot won the discus throw with a distance of 44.55 meters, with Slocumb right behind her for the second place finish. GSU had five of the top nine finishes in the hammer throw, with Amber Tiggs winning with her mark of 48.99 meters. Finally, Lindy Petteway won the javelin throw with a mark of 42.69 meters, which guarantees her a spot in the NCAA regionals.

The final GSU victory of the day came in the triple jump event, where Nicole Brown jumped 12.47 meters for the win and the NCAA regional qualification. Both Petteway and Brown had already qualified for the regionals in their respective events prior to this weekend's meet.

The Eagles will head to Boone, N.C. for the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships May 1-2 on the campus of Appalachian State University.
