Davidson Names Ashton Head Coach

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson Athletics Director Jim Murphy today announced the hiring of Greg Ashton as the Wildcats' new head coach for women's soccer. Ashton replaces Kevin Hundley who resigned earlier this spring after 13 seasons at the helm.

Ashton, who earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from the University of Texas San Antonio, has spent the past four years as the women's head coach of Division III Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Twice during those four seasons Ashton took the Tigers to the NCAA Division III Final Four, and three times won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Trinity finished the 2003 season with a 16-1-1 record and an 8-1 mark in the SCAC. The conference defeat was Ashton's lone loss in the SCAC in four seasons, going 35-1 during his tenure. In 2002, he led the Tigers to a 21-2 record, the most victories ever in a season at the school. The SCAC and NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year, Ashton finished his reign at Trinity with a record of 71-8-2. He coach coached five All-Americans, and each of his four teams received an NSCAA Team Academic Award for excellence in the classroom.

Before becoming the head coach at Trinity, he served as the assistant for five seasons, during which time the Tigers won the conference title and played in the Division III playoffs four times. Twice Trinity reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

A native of New Zealand, Ashton also holds a business degree from Auckland Tech. He played professionally in New Zealand from 1985-92, plus represented his country as a youth National Team member beginning with the Under-15 team through the Under-19 squad.

"Greg's record of success in a highly selective academic setting makes him a great fit for Davidson," said Murphy. "We're very excited about he and his family joining our program."
