Elon, Citadel Have Strong Showings at Elon Invitational

The Elon University women's track team took six of 19 events and the Citadel's men's track team took five of 19 events during the Elon University Invitational on Saturday at Irwin Belk Track and Dr. Alan and Norma White Field.

"I am pleased with out effort today," remarked head coach Jody Huddleston. "We are right were we want to be as we head into conference in two weeks."

The Phoenix claimed victories in: the 1500 meter dash (Alana Black - 4:38.99), the 400 meter hurdles (Alice Turner - 1:05.21), pole vault (Jessica Clendenning - 3.05 meters) and long jump (Brittany Boda - 5.17 meters).

The Elon squad placed in: 400 meter dash (3rd - Rochelle Reid - 1:00.31, 6th - Jessica Hayden - 1:02.48), 200 meter dash (2nd - Jessica Hayden - 26.37, 4th - Rochelle Reid - 26.46, 6th - Brittany Boda - 27.52), 800 meter run (8th - Courtney Tomaini - 2:32.83), 1500 meter run (7th - Clara Urquhart - 5:07.12), 100 meter hurdles (2nd - Brittany Boda - 14.83, 3rd - Alice Turner - 14.98), 400 meter hurdles (3rd - Sabrinna Faulkner - 1:10.81), 3000 meter steeplechase (3rd - Amy Sulser - 13:20.00, 4th Lillian Ciany - 13:54.18), 4x400 meter relay (3rd - 4:04.62), high jump (4th - Kimberly Adams - 1.48 meters), pole vault (2nd - Susan Shore - 2.89 meters), shot put (3rd - Angela Carlberg - 11.08 meters), discus (4th - Angela Carlberg - 34.35 meters, 7th - Sarah Buhl - 30.95 meters) and javelin (5th - Sarah Buhl - 26.99 meters).

The Bulldog men recorded victories in: 100 meter dash (Quintin Wright - 10.94), 400 meter hurdles (Thomas Cummings - 55.37), shot put (Erick Austin - 12.34 meters), discus (Zachary DiBois - 40.77 meters) and javelin (Travis Taylor - 50.19 meters). The Citadel had an especially strong showing in the field events placing five men in shot put, four men in discus and five men in the hammer throw.

A small contingent of Bulldogs will travel to Pennsylvania to participate in the Penn Relays. Events are scheduled to begin April 22 and run through April 24. Other members of The Citadel squad will travel to Davidson, NC to take part in the Irwin Belk Invitational, April 24. Events are slated to begin at 8 AM.

Gonzalez Takes Third At Elon

Elon, NC - The Citadel women's track and field team participated in the Elon Invitational held at the Irwin Belk Track and Dr. Alan Norma White Field.

"We did not compete as well as need to this late in the season," remarked head coach Jody Huddleston. "We have one more tune-up meet at Davidson this weekend in preparations for the conference championships. We need to be a little more consistent and more focused in the next two weeks."

Junior Kelly Pesterfield took sixth-place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.71. Freshman Amanda Rawl's 5000 meter time of 20:05.65 captured the seventh spot. In the field, sophomore Alexis Gonzalez took third with a leap of 8-6.0 in the pole vault competition.

The Citadel returns to action Saturday, April 24, at 10AM at the Irwin Belk Invitational in Davidson, NC.
