Men's Tennis 4/16/2004 10:35:00 AM Southern Conference Regular-Season Closes Saturday For Wofford Men's Tennis The Wofford men's tennis team will close its regular season with a 1 p.m. match Saturday versus Southern Conference newcomer Elon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The match will be a make up from the original Feb. 15 date that was postponed due to weather.Three seniors will be honored prior to the start of the match as part of Senior Day festivities. Playing in their final match in a Terrier uniform will be Kent Ball, Jason Mengel and Brandon Smith.Ball has been with the program for two years after transferring from Army. While with Wofford, he has played at the No. 1 singles position and has helped raise the standard for dominant and spectacular play in the short time. Originally from Royal Palm Beach, Fla., he also can be seen near the top of the doubles ladder.A native of Snellville, Ga., Mengel is a two-time co-captain with Smith. He has remained consistent in producing singles and doubles victories at crucial times in matches and has a great mind for the game. He knows when and where to make the shot to change the course of a match. With an unfathomable 16-3 overall and 9-0 Southern Conference record this season, Smith enters his final home match as a Terrier. An Alpharetta, Ga., native, he has won 12 consecutive matches and is a former team MVP after a 7-3 singles record during his sophomore campaign."Our team has played hard most of the year," said head coach Rod Ray. "If we are to be successful against Elon, we will need to play very hard physically, mentally and emotionally. It certainly is a winnable match, but it will not be easy. We need to prepare ourselves for a terrific challenge. This match has the potential to make us better as we head into the conference tournament."With eight wins this season, Wofford has matched its highest victory tally since joining the Southern Conference. One additional win would equal the Terriers' highest total since moving to the Division I level.
